Flocks help birds stay safe. One way is through alarm calls. A bird hears danger and makes a loud sound. This warns the whole group. Some birds use mobbing to stay safe. This is when birds surround a predator. They attack it to make it leave. This behavior is learned by young birds.

Birds also use flocks to find food. Some birds are sallies. They catch prey in the air. Others are gleaners. They find food in plants. When gleaners eat, they flush insects into the air. This helps the sallies find a meal.
