An artist named Alex Raymond created the strip in 1934. He wanted to make a new story to compete with Buck Rogers. Raymond got some ideas from a book called When Worlds Collide. This book was written by Philip Wylie in 1933. At first, Raymond's ideas did not have enough action. He had to rework the story before the company accepted it. He worked with a writer named Don W. Moore to help tell the tale.

Flash Gordon became a huge success all over the world. By the late 1930s, the strip was in 130 different newspapers. It was translated into eight foreign languages. About 50 million people read these stories! People even bought toys like rayguns and spaceships. In Australia, they even changed his name to Speed Gordon. This was done so people would not think the word "flash" meant something dishonest.

Many different artists have drawn Flash Gordon over the years. Austin Briggs and Mac Raboy both worked on the strip. Later, an artist named Dan Barry drew it for a long time. Even after the original strip ended in 2003, the stories stayed important. In October 2023, a new version of the strip began with artist Dan Schkade. The adventures of Flash Gordon helped change how people draw science fiction forever.

It is widely considered one of the most influential science-fiction works in American history. The strip features a handsome polo player and Yale University graduate named Flash Gordon. He travels through space to the exotic planet Mongo. He is joined by his companions, Dale Arden and the scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. Together, they face many dangers while exploring a strange and beautiful new world.

The story begins with a cosmic crisis. The planet Mongo is on a collision course with Earth. To prevent this disaster, Dr. Zarkov invents a rocket ship to fly into space. He kidnaps Flash and Dale to ensure they join the mission. Upon landing on Mongo, the trio must battle the evil ruler, Ming the Merciless.

This conflict drives the primary tension of the early adventures.

Mongo is a world divided into many distinct kingdoms and cultures. The heroes visit the forest kingdom of Arboria, which is ruled by Prince Barin. They travel to the frozen land of Frigia, governed by Queen Fria. They also explore the jungle kingdom of Tropica, ruled by Queen Desira. Other regions include the undersea kingdom of the Shark Men and the flying city of the Hawkmen.

These varied settings allowed the creators to build a massive, imaginative universe.

Alex Raymond created the strip in January 1934. King Features Syndicate wanted a new science-fiction series to compete with the successful Buck Rogers strip. Raymond drew inspiration from the 1933 novel *When Worlds Collide* by Philip Wylie. This book provided the themes of an approaching planet and a rocket journey. Raymond worked with ghostwriter Don W. Moore to develop the narrative. Although his first samples were initially rejected for lacking action, Raymond eventually succeeded.

The strip achieved massive global popularity. By the late 1930s, Flash Gordon appeared in 130 different newspapers. It was translated into eight foreign languages and reached 50 million readers. This success led to many licensed products, such as toy rayguns and spaceships. However, history also impacted its reach. During World War II, the strip was discontinued in many countries.

In Nazi Germany, newspapers were forbidden from carrying the strip.

Many talented artists maintained the series over several decades. After Raymond left in 1944, Austin Briggs took over the Sunday strip. Later, Mac Raboy drew the series until 1967. Dan Barry held the position for a long tenure, running from 1951 to 1990. He was assisted by several artists, including Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson. Even after the original run ended in 2003, the character returned in 2023 under artist Dan Schkade.

Flash Gordon remains a vital part of comic history. Critics often praise Raymond's technical virtuosity and his "romantic baroque" art style. His work helped define the visual language of science fiction. The strip influenced many later creators and genres. It showed how detailed illustration and imaginative world-building could captivate a global audience. The legacy of Mongo continues to inspire through new drawings and stories.
