By 549 AD, people were using paper kites to send rescue messages. In Greece, a man named Archytas reportedly built a steam-powered device around 400 BC. Much later, Sir George Cayley described the modern airplane in 1799. He thought about how to use lift, propulsion, and control together.

He even built a glider that could carry a person in 1853.

Many inventors worked hard to make powered flight a reality. In 1903, the Wright brothers achieved the first sustained and controlled powered flight.

This lift is an upward force generated by the aircraft's wings as they move through the air. Fixed-wing flight is distinct from rotary-wing flight, which uses spinning rotors like a helicopter. It is also different from ornithopters, which use oscillating wings to create lift. While many people think of wings as rigid structures, they do not always have to be stiff. Kites, hang gliders, and aircraft that use wing morphing are all classified as fixed-wing.

Some aircraft can even change their wing shape during flight, known as variable-sweep wings.

The mechanism of flight relies on the relationship between lift and thrust. To stay in the air, an aircraft needs lift to counteract gravity. To generate this lift, the aircraft must move through the air, which requires thrust. In powered aircraft, such as airplanes, an engine provides this forward thrust. This thrust can come from a propeller or a jet engine.

Without forward motion, the wings cannot create the necessary aerodynamic forces. Gliding aircraft, such as free-flying gliders or tethered kites, use moving air currents to gain altitude instead of using an engine.

Some specialized machines, called ground effect vehicles, fly very close to the terrain. These vehicles use the interaction between the wings and the surface to stay aloft.

There are several distinct types of fixed-wing aircraft based on their design and use. The most common type is the airplane, which is a powered craft used for transport, military missions, or research. Seaplanes are another category, designed to take off and land on water. These are divided into float planes and flying boats. A float plane uses large floats to keep the fuselage above the water. In contrast, a flying boat has a watertight hull that rests directly on the water's surface.

The history of fixed-wing flight began thousands of years ago with the invention of the kite. Kites were used in China approximately 2,800 years ago. By 549 AD, paper kites were even used to send messages for rescue missions. In ancient Greece, Archytas reportedly designed a steam-propelled device shaped like a bird around 400 BC.

The modern concept of the airplane was laid out by Sir George Cayley in 1799. He identified the three essential systems needed for flight: lift, propulsion, and control. Cayley built models as early as 1803 and created a successful passenger-carrying glider in 1853.

Other early pioneers included Jean-Marie Le Bris, who performed a towed powered flight in 1856, and Otto Lilienthal, who conducted glider flights in the late 1800s.

Achieving sustained, controlled, and powered flight was a major milestone in aviation history. The Wright brothers are recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) for their 1903 flights with the Flyer I.

By 1905, their Wright Flyer III was capable of stable and controllable flight for long periods. In 1906, Alberto Santos Dumont flew the 14 bis, which set the first world record recognized by the Aéro-Club de France.

As technology progressed, aircraft became much faster and larger. In 1947, Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1, the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound.

Later, the Boeing 747 became the world's largest passenger aircraft from 1970 until it was surpassed by the Airbus A380 in 2005.

Aircraft have played significant roles in global history, particularly during major conflicts. During World War I, aircraft were used for observation and as weapons. By 1915, fighters equipped with synchronized machine guns were in use. World War II saw aircraft become essential to military strategy, including the use of aircraft carriers in the Pacific.

The war also drove the development of jet engines. The Heinkel He 178 was the first jet aircraft to fly in 1939, and the Messerschmitt Me 262 became the first operational jet fighter in 1943. Even during the Cold War, aircraft like the B-52 were produced to meet new needs.

Today, fixed-wing aircraft are connected to many different fields and systems. They are vital for global transportation, moving goods and people across the world. In the military, they are used for protection and advanced research, such as the stealthy B-2 Spirit. Some aircraft are controlled by a human pilot in a cockpit, while others are controlled remotely. There are even completely autonomous aircraft that fly themselves without any human pilot. From small recreational hang gliders to massive commercial jetliners, fixed-wing technology continues to evolve and change how we interact with the world.
