Aeronautics is the study and design of machines that fly. 

Long ago, people watched birds to learn about flight. Leonardo da Vinci drew designs for early flying machines. He thought about using springs for power. Later, the Montgolfier brothers used hot air to fly balloons. 
Sir George Cayley is the father of modern aeronautics. He found the four forces of flight. These are thrust, lift, drag, and weight. He also found that curved wings work well. Otto Lilienthal was another important person. He made many successful flights in gliders. He helped people see that flying was possible. Today, engineers use these ideas to build huge planes.

Many famous names helped turn these ideas into real machines. Sir George Cayley is known as the father of modern aeronautics. In 1809, he published a famous work called "On Aerial Navigation." He was the first to truly study the science of flight. Another important person was Otto Lilienthal. He was a German engineer known as the "flying man." 
Today, aeronautics is divided into three main branches. Aviation is the actual practice of flying. Aeronautical engineering is the work of designing and building the craft. This includes making sure they are powered and controlled safely. 

Aeronautics is the science and art involved with the study, design, and manufacturing of machines capable of flight. This field covers the technical ways we operate aircraft and rockets within the Earth's atmosphere. While people often use the term "aviation" interchangeably, aeronautics is actually a broader category. It includes lighter-than-air craft, such as airships, as well as ballistic vehicles. 
To understand how flight works, one must look at the interaction between power and air resistance. Sir George Cayley defined the core problem of flight as making a surface support a specific weight. He achieved this by applying power to overcome the resistance of the air. Cayley identified four specific vector forces that influence every aircraft. These forces are thrust, lift, drag, and weight. 
Lighter-than-air flight followed a different scientific path. In the 17th century, Galileo demonstrated that air actually has weight. Later, in 1670, Francesco Lana de Terzi proposed using hollow metal spheres to lift an airship. He suggested pumping all the air out of these spheres so they would be lighter than the air they displaced. 
In the late 18th century, the Montgolfier brothers began experimenting with balloons in France. They originally used hot smoky air, which they called "electric smoke," to achieve lift. This led to the development of the Montgolfière type of balloon. Meanwhile, Jacques Charles developed the Charlière, or gas balloon, using hydrogen. He used a gas-tight material made of rubberised silk for the envelope. Another attempt at advanced design was the Rozière balloon. Developed by de Rozier, it used both hot air and hydrogen gas bags. The goal was to use hydrogen for constant lift and hot air to navigate vertically by changing temperature. However, the first flight of this design ended in disaster.
Modern aeronautical science was truly founded by Sir George Cayley. In 1809, he began publishing a landmark treatise titled "On Aerial Navigation." Cayley was the first to publish the underlying principles and forces of flight. Because of his scientific rigor, he was called the "father of the aeroplane" in 1846. He developed the modern conventional form of the fixed-wing aeroplane. This design included a stabilizing tail with both horizontal and vertical surfaces. He also invented the tension-spoked wheel to create light, strong undercarriages for aircraft.
As the 19th century progressed, Otto Lilienthal made the idea of heavier-than-air flight a reality. He was a German engineer known as the "flying man." Lilienthal was the first person to make well-documented and repeated successful flights using gliders. 
Today, the field is organized into three distinct branches. Aviation is the art or practice of aeronautics, including flying balloons and airships. Aeronautical engineering covers the design and construction of aircraft. This includes how they are powered, used, and controlled for safe operation.
