Bumin had a brother named Istämi. Istämi helped the empire grow toward the west. The Göktürks even traded silk with the Byzantine Empire. They also made deals with the Sassanid Empire in Iran.

But the empire did not stay one piece. Fighting broke out between different leaders. This was a civil war. In 603, the empire split into two parts. One was the Eastern Turkic Khaganate. The other was the Western Turkic Khaganate.

The First Turkic Khaganate was a huge empire in Central Asia. It was ruled by a group called the Ashina clan. This empire was very special because it was the first Turkic state to use the name "Türk" for itself.

It grew so large that it stretched from Manchuria all the way to the Black Sea. This made it a transcontinental empire. People in this land were very good at working with metal. Some history books suggest they were skilled blacksmiths or miners. This skill helped them become a strong power in the region.

The empire grew through clever leadership and strong armies. Bumin Qaghan was the leader who started it all in 552. He led his people to defeat the Rouran Khaganate. The Rouran had ruled the Mongolian Plateau for a long time before him.

After Bumin won, he became the leader known as Illig Khagan. He died only a few months later. His empire was then shared by his other sons. One son was named Muqan Qaghan. His brother was named Istämi, who was known as the Yabghu of the West.

Expansion helped the empire connect with many different parts of the world. Istämi helped the empire grow toward the west. He even made an alliance with the Sassanid Empire in Iran. This helped the Ashina clan control the famous Silk Road. The Göktürks also sent gifts of silk to the Byzantine Empire. They even sent an embassy to the capital city of Constantinople in 568. These connections brought different cultures together through trade and diplomacy.

Internal fighting eventually caused the large empire to break apart. After the ruler Taspar Qaghan died in 581, a struggle for power began. Different leaders fought for the title of khagan.

This civil war was very difficult for the people. In 603, the empire split into two separate parts. One part was the Eastern Turkic Khaganate. The other part was the Western Turkic Khaganate. These two groups lived in different areas and had different leaders.

The end of the first empire came through many different events. The Tang dynasty from China began a series of military campaigns. They conquered the Eastern part in 630. They also conquered the Western part in 657.

Even though the first empire fell, new groups rose up later. A group called the Second Turkic Khaganate appeared in 682. This new empire lasted until the Uyghur Khaganate took over in 744. The story of the Turks continued through these many changes.

The First Turkic Khaganate was a massive transcontinental empire in medieval Inner Asia. It was established by the Ashina clan of the Göktürks. This state was the first to use the name "Türk" for political purposes. It stretched across a huge area from Manchuria to the Black Sea. This made it a major power in Central Asia. The empire succeeded the Rouran Khaganate as the dominant force on the Mongolian Plateau.

Many historians believe the Göktürks were specialists in metallurgy. This means they were skilled at working with metal. Some sources suggest they were miners or blacksmiths. The Rouran leader, Yujiulü Anagui, once called Bumin Qaghan a "blacksmith slave." This term likely referred to a form of vassalage or an unequal alliance. It shows the Turks had a specific role in Rouran society. Their skills with metal likely helped them grow into a strong military power.

The empire began with a major shift in power in 546. Bumin Qaghan led a preemptive strike against the Uyghur and Tiele groups. He did this to stop them from revolting against the Rouran Khaganate. Bumin hoped to be rewarded with a Rouran princess through marriage. Instead, the Rouran leader insulted him. Bumin eventually allied with the Western Wei to defeat the Rouran. In 552, Bumin defeated Anagui's forces north of Huaihuang. This victory effectively ended the Rouran dominance.

After Bumin became Illig Khagan, the empire was divided among his sons. Muqan Qaghan ruled the eastern part centered in Mongolia. His brother, Istämi, became the Yabghu of the West. Istämi was a key figure in western expansion. In 557, he formed an alliance with Khosrow I of the Sassanid Empire. This alliance helped the Göktürks destroy the Hephthalite Empire. This victory allowed the Ashina clan to tighten their control over the Silk Road.

The Göktürks also engaged in complex diplomacy with the Byzantine Empire. An embassy arrived in Constantinople in 568. They brought gifts of silk for Emperor Justin II. The Byzantines were interested in an alliance against the Sassanid Empire. However, relations were not always peaceful. In 575, a Byzantine delegation was treated with hostility during the funeral of Istämi. The new ruler, Tardu, continued this tension. These interactions show how the Khaganate connected different parts of the world through trade and politics.

Internal conflict eventually led to the empire's collapse. After the death of Taspar Qaghan in 581, a succession struggle began. Multiple rivals claimed the title of khagan. This civil war split the polity into two parts in 603. These were the Eastern Turkic Khaganate and the Western Turkic Khaganate. The Eastern part remained in the orbit of the Sui dynasty. The Western part became more independent under leaders like Tardu.

The Tang dynasty eventually conquered the divided empire. Tang forces defeated the Eastern Turkic Khaganate in 630. They also conquered the Western Turkic Khaganate in 657. This happened after years of military campaigns and shifting alliances. Even after this fall, the Turkic legacy continued. The Second Turkic Khaganate emerged in 682. It lasted until the Uyghur Khaganate overthrew it in 744.
