First language

A first language is the very first way a person learns to speak. People often call it a mother tongue or a native language. This language is a huge part of who a person is. It helps a child learn how to act and talk in their community. It also connects them to their own culture and social group.

Learning this language is a natural part of growing up. It helps children understand how to follow social patterns through speech.

Becoming a native speaker happens through a special way of learning. A child learns by listening to adults in their own family. This process is called natural acquisition. Native speakers often have a special feeling for their language. They might not know every single grammar rule by name. Instead, they have a strong intuition about how words should sound.

This means they just know when a sentence feels right or wrong. It is different from learning a language later in life.

There is a long history behind these words. A thinker named Ivan Illich said the term "mother tongue" came from Catholic monks. They used it to describe the language they spoke to people. They spoke this language instead of Latin when they were at the pulpit. This term was later passed down through history.

Another writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, spoke about different types of native speech. In 1955, he talked about the "cradle tongue" learned in early childhood. He believed a person might find a true native tongue later through emotion.

Many different rules help experts define a native speaker. One rule is that the person learned the language in early childhood. They must also use the language and speak it fluently. Experts look for people who can speak easily in many social settings. They also look for people who do not have a foreign accent.

Some studies show that learning a second language takes a long time. A child might need five to seven years to reach a native level. UNESCO even created a special day to celebrate these important languages. They named February 21 as International Mother Language Day.

Sometimes, a person can have more than one first language. These people are called bilingual if they speak two languages well. If they speak many languages, they are called multilingual.

Some children grow up speaking two languages at the same time. They might be so good at both that neither feels like a "native" one. This is called being a balanced bilingual. These people are often very good at shifting between their languages. They can use their skills to think in very flexible ways.
