Long ago, there was a war.
Long ago, a war began in a place called the Balkans.
Four small lands joined together to fight. They made a group called the Balkan League. They fought against the Ottoman Empire.
The small lands won the war. This changed who owned the land. Many people had to leave their homes.
After the war, things were different. A new land called Albania was made. Some groups were not happy about this.
New borders were drawn on the map. The world looked very different after that.
In 1912, a big war began in the Balkans. This area is in Southeast Europe.
Four nations joined together to fight. They were Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia. They formed a group called the Balkan League. They fought against the Ottoman Empire.
The Balkan League had many soldiers. Bulgaria had a very strong army. They had almost 600,000 men ready to fight.
The Ottoman Empire had a hard time. Their army was not well organized. Many people in the Ottoman Empire were not ready. This made the war very difficult for them.
The Balkan League won the war. By May 1913, they took most of the Ottoman lands in Europe. This changed the map of the region. A new country called Albania was also made.
The war was very hard for many people. Many Turkish families had to leave their homes. Some people were killed during the fighting. These changes made the region very different for a long time.
The First Balkan War was a major conflict in Southeast Europe. It took place from October 1912 to May 1913.
The war moved quickly because of how the armies were set up. The Balkan League had many soldiers working together. Bulgaria had a very large and well-trained army. They could call up almost 600,000 men to fight.
Many years of tension led to this fighting. Different groups in the Balkans wanted more power. Some groups fought for many years in a struggle called the Macedonian Struggle. In 1908, changes in the Ottoman government caused more trouble. This led to revolts in places like Albania.
The fighting was very difficult for regular people. Many civilians lived in the areas where the armies fought. Most of these people were Muslim Turks. Because the Ottoman army was disorganized, they could not help these people move safely. Many families were forced to flee their homes. Others were killed during the many battles.
In the end, the Balkan League won a huge victory. They captured almost all the Ottoman lands in Europe. The Ottoman Empire lost 83% of its European territory.
The First Balkan War was a major conflict in Southeast Europe. It lasted from October 1912 to May 1913.
Before the war, many tensions existed in the Balkans. For years, different groups fought in the Macedonian Struggle. This was a conflict over control of Ottoman-controlled Rumelia. In 1908, the Young Turk Revolution changed the Ottoman government. This event restored the empire's constitution. However, it also led to instability. In 1912, Albanian rebels fought for autonomy. They drove Young Turkish forces out of Skopje. These revolts made the Balkan states believe the Ottoman Empire was weakening.
The Balkan states formed alliances to prepare for war. Serbia and Montenegro signed a formal agreement on March 7, 1912. Serbia and Bulgaria also made a secret deal. They agreed on how to divide Macedonia if they won. Bulgaria would take land south of the Kriva Palanka–Ohrid line. Serbia would expand north of the Shar Mountains. The area between them was left for arbitration by the Russian Tsar.
Bulgaria was a very strong military power in the region. It was often called the "Prussia of the Balkans." Bulgaria mobilized 599,878 men from its population of 4.3 million. Its army included nine infantry divisions and one cavalry division. Tsar Ferdinand was the commander-in-chief. General Mihail Savov held the operating command. Bulgaria planned to attack Thrace using three separate armies.
The Ottoman military faced severe organizational problems. They did not have enough soldiers ready for the fight. They only had 324,718 regular ranks ready by October. This was far below their plan of 750,000 soldiers. Poor transportation and other wars made things worse. The Ottoman armies were also strategically disadvantaged. They faced a combined force of over 850,000 soldiers from the League. This included 346,182 Bulgarians and 115,000 Greeks.
The war was a disaster for the Ottoman Empire. They lost 83% of their European territories. They also lost 69% of their European population. The Balkan League captured almost all remaining Ottoman land in Europe. This led to the creation of an independent Albania. However, the victory did not bring peace to the allies. Bulgaria was unhappy with the division of Macedonia. This dissatisfaction led to the Second Balkan War in June 1913.
Many civilians suffered greatly during the fighting. Most of these civilians were Muslim Turks. The Ottoman army was too disorganized to evacuate them. This left many people defenseless in the war zones. Many civilians were killed or forced to flee their homes. These events caused massive changes to the region's demographics. The war showed how quickly political borders and populations can shift.
