They possess three pairs of legs and a pair of antennae. To identify a Solenopsis species, scientists look for three specific features. These include a pedicel with two nodes, an unarmed propodeum, and antennae with ten segments plus a two-segmented club. Invasive species in the United States often show a copper brown head and thorax with a darker abdomen.

Fire ants have a unique and highly effective method of attacking targets. Most formicine ants bite a target and then spray formic acid onto the wound. In contrast, myrmicine ants like fire ants use their mandibles to bite only to establish a firm grip. Once they are anchored, they use their abdomen to inject a toxic alkaloid venom called solenopsin. This venom is a compound from the piperidine class and is composed of over 95% oily alkaloids.

Within a colony, ants are organized into specialized roles to ensure survival. The queens are the reproductive females and are generally the largest members of the group. One specific species, Solenopsis invicta, is known as the red imported fire ant (RIFA). This species is an invasive pest in the United States, Australia, China, and Taiwan. It is believed that RIFA was accidentally moved between countries via shipping crates. In Australia, the invasion has been a massive economic challenge. Between 2001 and 2022, the government spent AU$644 million attempting to eradicate the ants. In the United States, the impact is also severe. The FDA estimates that over $5 billion is spent annually on medical treatment, control, and damage caused by RIFA. The presence of fire ants can even force other species to change over time. Because fire ants are more aggressive than many native species, they often push others out of their habitats. A study from 2009 showed that lizards in parts of the United States adapted to fire ants in just seventy years. These lizards developed longer legs and new behaviors to help them escape the ants. Fire ants also interact with other species through complex relationships. They can be parasites, such as when they rob the cells of orchid bees. Conversely, they can be mutualistic, such as when they protect certain butterfly larvae in exchange for sugary fluids.
