Filipe Nyusi is a leader from Mozambique, a country in Africa. He served as the nation's president from 2015 to 2025.
Before he became president, he held other important jobs. He was the Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2014. He also worked for a large company that manages ports and railways. Nyusi studied to become a mechanical engineer in the Czech Republic. His life has been shaped by many big changes in his country.
Nyusi won two major elections to become the leader. In 2014, he won with 68% of the vote. He then won again in 2019 with 73% of the vote.
However, these elections were not seen the same way by everyone. Some groups, like the European Union, said there was fraud and intimidation. They reported that some leaders and observers were killed during the 2019 vote. The National Election Commission said the elections were fair, but others disagreed.
His time as president included many difficult challenges for the people. Between 2015 and 2018, the number of poor people in Mozambique grew. The number of people living in poverty rose from 21.3 million to 22.2 million.
Many young people also struggled to find jobs. There were also serious legal accusations against him. Some court documents in the U.S. and London alleged he took bribes. These were linked to "hidden debts" that caused an economic crisis.
War and peace were also big parts of his presidency. Fighting broke out in the central and northern parts of the country.
To help fix this, Nyusi worked to find peace with a group called RENAMO. In 2016, he traveled to meet their leader, Afonso Dhlakama. This was a very special moment in Mozambique's history. In August 2019, they signed the Maputo Accord for Peace. This agreement helped many former fighters return to their normal lives.
As president, Nyusi also met with many important world leaders. He met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016. He also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2019.

Filipe Jacinto Nyusi is a prominent Mozambican politician. He served as the fourth president of Mozambique from 2015 to 2025.
He was the candidate for FRELIMO, which is the ruling political party in the country. Nyusi's leadership spanned a period of significant economic shifts and intense political debate. His career involved roles in defense, engineering, and international diplomacy. He also served as the Chairman of the Southern African Development Community from 2020 to 2022.
Nyusi's early life was shaped by the Mozambican War of Independence. He was born in 1959 in the Mueda District of Cabo Delgado Province. Both of his parents were veterans of the FRELIMO liberation movement. During the war, he moved to Tanzania for his education. He later studied mechanical engineering at the Antonín Zápotocký Military Academy in what is now the Czech Republic. Before entering high-level politics, he worked for the Mozambique Ports and Railways Authority. He served as the executive director of its northern division, CFM-Norte, starting in 1995.
His rise to national power began in the cabinet of President Armando Guebuza. Nyusi served as the Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2014. This period followed a major disaster at the Malhazine armory in Maputo. That explosion killed over 100 people and destroyed 14,000 homes. In 2014, the FRELIMO Central Committee selected him as their presidential candidate. He won the election by defeating Luisa Diogo in a second round of voting. He received 68% of the vote in that decisive round.
Nyusi won a second term in the 2019 presidential election. He received 73% of the total vote. However, this election faced heavy criticism from international observers. The European Union and the Commonwealth Observer Group reported instances of fraud and intimidation. They also noted the murders of opposition leaders and election observers during this time. While the National Election Commission stated the elections were fair, others pointed to significant irregularities. Some opposition members claimed there were hundreds of thousands of "ghost voters" in the system.
His presidency faced serious economic and social challenges. Between 2015 and 2018, the number of multidimensionally poor people in Mozambique increased. The population of poor people rose from 21.3 million to approximately 22.2 million. Many young people also struggled with unemployment. Furthermore, Nyusi faced legal allegations regarding "hidden debts." These were illegal loans totaling $2.2 billion taken by state-owned companies between 2013 and 2014. Court documents in New York and London alleged that Nyusi received bribes totaling millions of dollars. These debts caused a major economic crisis and a collapse in the local currency.
Conflict also shaped his time in office. Fighting escalated in the central and northern regions of Mozambique. In 2016, Nyusi took a historic step toward peace by meeting with RENAMO leader Afonso Dhlakama. This was the first time a sitting president traveled to a RENAMO stronghold in Gorongosa. Their negotiations led to the Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation in August 2019. This agreement supported a process called disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, or DDR. So far, 2,307 people have benefited from this DDR process to rejoin society.
On the global stage, Nyusi engaged with many world leaders.
He met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.
He also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2019.
These meetings helped manage Mozambique's relations with major global powers. His presidency remains a complex chapter in the history of Southern Africa.
