Figure skating

Figure skating is a highly technical sport performed on ice.

Athletes perform a variety of jumps, spins, and dance moves. They can compete as individuals or in groups. The sport is a blend of physical strength and artistic expression. It is regulated internationally by the International Skating Union, known as the ISU. The ISU manages major competitions like the World Championships and the Winter Olympics.

This organization ensures that judging and rules remain consistent across the globe.

To perform these moves, skaters use specialized footwear called figure skates.

These consist of a boot and a metal blade mounted with screws. The blades are not flat but feature a slight curve called a rocker. This curvature allows for smooth gliding and controlled spinning. A specific area called the "sweet spot" is used for rotations. This spot is the roundest part of the blade, located near the stanchion. The blade is also "hollow ground," meaning a groove creates two distinct edges. These are the inside edge and the outside edge.

Skilled skaters use these edges to generate speed and power.

Different disciplines require different types of equipment and techniques. In singles skating, men and women compete individually. They must perform elements like jump combinations and step sequences. Pair skating involves one man and one woman skating in unison.

They perform intricate moves like lifts and twist lifts. Ice dance is another discipline that focuses on close partnership. Ice dancers use blades with smaller toe picks and shorter tails. These design choices help them perform complex footwork without blade clashes.

Other forms include synchronized skating and Theater on Ice.

Jumps are a central part of many skating disciplines. To launch into the air, skaters use the toe pick. These are the large, jagged teeth located at the front of the blade.

In singles and pairs, these picks are large to assist with take-offs. However, using a toe pick during a spin can cause a skater to lose momentum. Skaters must also master landing these jumps on a single edge. Modern technology has introduced carbon fiber into blade production. These materials can make blades lighter and more flexible. This flexibility helps cushion the impact of landings and protects the athlete's joints.

Figure skating has a deep history within organized sports. It was the first winter sport included in the Olympic Games. This occurred during the 1908 Olympics held in London.

Before indoor rinks, skaters relied on natural ice. The development of indoor rinks changed the sport forever. The first notable indoor rink was built in 1876 by John Gamgee.

It was located in Chelsea, England, and measured 24 by 40 feet. Indoor facilities allow for year-round training and global competition. This prevents events from being canceled due to a lack of natural ice.

Competition environments are strictly controlled to ensure fairness. The ISU prefers Olympic-sized rinks for major events. These rinks typically measure 60 meters by 30 meters.

Smaller rinks can hinder a skater's speed and jump setups. Even the temperature of the ice is carefully managed. For Olympic disciplines, the ice is kept at -3.5°C. This temperature provides the necessary hardness for the sport. For synchronized skating, the ice is kept slightly colder at -5.5°C. Ice quality is judged by smoothness, hardness, and brittleness.

Training for this sport involves both on-ice and off-ice work. Off-ice training includes physical conditioning and practicing jump rotations on land. Skaters also use specialized tools to learn difficult moves safely. A harness system uses a heavy-duty cable and pulleys to support the skater.

This allows a coach to assist the skater during a jump. There is also a "fishing pole harness" for more independent practice. This tool lets the skater choose their own patterns while jumping. Through this intense preparation, skaters move from beginner levels to the senior Olympic stage.
