Borges used many special ideas in his writing. One big idea is the labyrinth. A labyrinth is a complex maze. He used mazes to show how big the world is. Mazes can also show how time works. He wrote about games of chance and secret groups. He also wrote about books. He loved books so much that he gave them great detail. In one story, he says a librarian is very holy.

Some stories in the book use a narrator named Borges. This person is like the writer, but he has human flaws. Borges also used red rooms in his stories. He wrote the stories between 1941 and 1956. The book has two main parts. The first part is called The Garden of Forking Paths. The second part is called Artifices. These stories make readers think about big ideas.
