Fibroblast

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Fibroblasts are very important cells in animals. They are the most common cells found in connective tissue. These cells help build the bulk of an organism. They create the stroma, which is a structural framework for tissues.

Without them, our bodies would lack their basic shape. They are essential for keeping our tissues strong and healthy.

These cells work in a very specific way. They make the extracellular matrix, or ECM. This is a collection of fibers and substances that surround cells. Fibroblasts produce collagen and other parts like elastic fibers. They also make glycosaminoglycans to help build this matrix.

This process helps maintain the integrity of our connective tissues. The specific mix of these parts determines how tough a tissue feels.

Scientists have studied how these cells change over time. An active fibroblast is a cell working hard to build things. When a fibroblast becomes less active, it is called a fibrocyte.

Fibrocytes are smaller and have a spindle shape. They focus on maintenance and tissue metabolism instead of building. The name "blast" in biology tells us a cell is in an active state.

There are many interesting facts about how they live. In chick embryos, a fibroblast lives for about 57 days. These cells can also move slowly over surfaces. They do not stay in one flat layer like epithelial cells do.

Sometimes, they can even change into different types of cells. This change is called an epithelial-mesenchymal transition. It happens during wound healing and other important growth stages.

Fibroblasts also help protect the body from harm. They play a big role in the immune response. When germs enter the body, they help start inflammation.

They use receptors on their surface to send signals. These signals tell other immune cells to come and help. This is a special kind of defense called structural immunity. It helps our bodies respond quickly to any injury.
