Ferrite (magnet)

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ferrite is a special family of magnetic ceramic materials. These materials are mostly made of iron oxide. They are called ferrimagnetic because they are attracted to magnetic fields. You can also magnetize them to become permanent magnets. Most ferrites are hard and brittle like a ceramic plate. They are also poor conductors of electricity. This quality makes them very useful in many machines.

Scientists divide ferrites into two main groups. The first group is called "hard" ferrites. These have high coercivity, which means they are hard to demagnetize. They stay magnetic for a long time. People use them for refrigerator magnets and small electric motors.

The second group is called "soft" ferrites. These have low coercivity and change their magnetism easily. They act as conductors for magnetic fields.

In 1930, two scientists named Yogoro Kato and Takeshi Takei made the first ferrite compounds. They worked at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. These materials are very important because they are extremely low cost. They are also very good at resisting corrosion. This means they do not rust easily.

Soft ferrites are used in many electronic parts. Manganese-zinc ferrites are used for frequencies between 0.5 MHz and 5 MHz. Nickel-zinc ferrites work better for frequencies above 1 MHz. Engineers use these in antennas for AM radios.

Hard ferrites like strontium ferrite are used in many different industries. They are used in microwave devices and telecommunications. Barium ferrite is also common for magnetic recording.

You can find ferrites in many things you use every day. Some computer cables have a small lump called a ferrite bead. This bead helps stop electrical noise from moving through the wire. Ferrites are also used in the magnets inside loudspeakers. They are even used in the coatings of magnetic recording tapes. Some stealth aircraft use ferrite coatings to absorb radar.
