Ferdinand VI was a king who ruled Spain for thirteen years.

He was the third ruler of the Spanish Bourbon family. Ferdinand was born in Madrid on September 23, 1713. He was the son of King Philip V and Queen Maria Luisa. His childhood was very lonely and difficult. His mother died when he was only five months old. Later, his stepmother Elisabeth Farnese held a lot of power in the palace.

Ferdinand became king in 1746 after his father died. He was known for keeping Spain out of big European wars. This was a very important choice for his country. He followed a policy of staying neutral between France and Great Britain. He refused to join their fights even when they asked him. This helped keep his land peaceful for many years. His reign was much calmer than the times before his rule.

To make Spain stronger, Ferdinand worked on many big changes. He had a helper named the Marquis of Ensenada. Ensenada suggested new ways to manage the country's money. In 1752, they created a place called the Giro Real to help the state.

Ferdinand also helped improve trade with the Americas. He moved away from using large fleets of ships. Instead, he allowed single Spanish ships to trade more freely. This helped bring more money into the country.

Ferdinand also cared about the arts and the navy. He increased the budget to build more ships. He helped start the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1752. Ferdinand loved music and was a patron of the singer Farinelli.

The famous composer Domenico Scarlatti also worked at his court. However, Ferdinand did make some hard choices that hurt people. In 1749, he ordered the imprisonment of 9,000 Roma people.

In his final years, Ferdinand became very ill. He struggled with his mental health, much like his father did. Some people think he was very sad after his wife, Barbara, died in 1758. This time was called the "year without a king" because he could not rule.
