Calderón was a member of the National Action Party, or PAN, for 30 years. He eventually left the party in November 2018 to found a new group. This group was called Free Mexico, but its registration was later rejected by the INE. The INE is the agency that oversees elections in Mexico.

He later moved to Mexico City to study law. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Escuela Libre de Derecho. He also earned a master's degree in economics from ITAM. Calderón was the PAN candidate after winning a competitive primary election. The official results showed him winning by only 0.6% of the total votes. His opponent, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, disputed these results. He called for a complete recount of the votes. The Federal Electoral Tribunal eventually confirmed Calderón's victory months later. However, the close margin meant his administration faced questions about its legitimacy.

Ten days after taking office, Calderón declared war on the country's drug cartels.

This started a period of intense conflict known as the Mexican drug war. He approved Operation Michoacán to deploy federal forces against drug gangs. This strategy was seen by many as a way to gain popular support. The war led to a significant increase in homicides. These killings peaked in 2010 before declining in his final two years. By the end of his rule, 60,000 people had been officially killed in the conflict.

Calderón's administration also managed several major social and economic changes.

The Great Recession was a global economic downturn that affected Mexico. To help the economy, the government passed a countercyclical package in 2009. This caused the national debt to rise from 22.2% to 35% of the GDP. By December 2012, the poverty rate had also increased from 43% to 46%. Despite these struggles, he also created sixteen new Protected Natural Areas.

In the years after his presidency, some legal controversies emerged.

In 2023, García Luna was convicted in the United States on drug trafficking charges. Following this, General Tomás Ángeles Dauahare claimed Calderón knew of these ties.
