A feeling is a very private experience. It is how you sense the world inside your own mind.

Experts say a feeling is a self-contained experience. This means it is personal and stays with you. Feelings are different from moods. A mood can last for a long time. A feeling is often short. It stays tied to a specific thought or event.

Feelings help us judge things. They tell us if something is good or bad. This helps us know if our needs are being met.

Feelings work by connecting our minds to our bodies. This is often called interoception. Interoception is the way your brain senses changes inside your body.

For example, you might feel a change in your heart. You might even get a "gut feeling." This is a quick reaction in your stomach. It can feel like trust or unease. Some scientists say emotions are mental images. They say feelings are the actual perception of those bodily changes. This helps us understand our inner life.

Many thinkers have studied feelings throughout history. In the late 1800s, Wilhelm Wundt studied how we feel. He thought feelings had three parts. They could be pleasant or unpleasant. They could be arousing or subduing. They could also involve strain or relaxation. Later, William James wrote about feelings in 1884. He thought we feel things because our bodies react first. He said we feel sorry because we cry. He said we feel afraid because we tremble.

Different cultures have their own ways to describe feelings. In Buddhist psychology, feelings are called vedanā. These are not exactly emotions. They are basic tones that happen with every experience. There are three types: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. In Hindu philosophy, people study rasa theory. Rasa refers to aesthetic-emotional essences. There are nine primary rasas. These include love, sorrow, and wonder. These feelings are shared through poetry or dance.

Feelings are linked to many things you already know. They connect to your needs, like food or water. If you do not meet a need, it can cause harm. Feelings also link to your motivation. Motivation is what makes you start or stop a behavior. Your feelings can act like a guide. They can help you make decisions. They can even tell you the right thing to do. This is often called common sense. Feelings are a huge part of being a living thing.
