He published this in the tenth edition of his work, *Systema Naturae*. The name *Falco* comes from a Late Latin word meaning "sickle," referring to the bird's claws. Historically, people used specific terms for these birds. A male falcon was called a "tercel" or "tiercel." This name likely came from the belief that only one in three eggs produced a male. A young chick is known as an "eyas."
Falcons exhibit incredible physical extremes in size and speed. The gyrfalcon is the largest species, while the pygmy falcon is the smallest. Many species show sexual dimorphism, meaning females are typically larger than males. This allows the species to hunt a wider variety of prey. Falcons also possess exceptional visual acuity. One species has vision measured at 2.6 times the strength of human eyes. 

Despite their appearance, falcons are not closely related to hawks or eagles. They belong to the subfamily Falconinae within the family Falconidae.
