These worlds orbit stars other than our Sun. Scientists first confirmed an exoplanet in 1992. This planet was found near a pulsar. A pulsar is a very dense, spinning star.

We find these planets in many ways. One way is transit photometry. This happens when a planet passes in front of a star. The star looks a bit dimmer during this time. Another way is Doppler spectroscopy. This looks at how a star moves. A planet's gravity can pull on its star. This makes the star wobble slightly.

Some planets are in the habitable zone. This is often called the Goldilocks zone. It is a place that is not too hot or too cold. In this spot, liquid water might exist on the surface.

Scientists use special ways to find these distant worlds. One way is called transit photometry. This happens when a planet passes in front of its star. This makes the star look a bit dimmer for a moment. Another way is Doppler spectroscopy. This method looks at how a star moves or wobbles. A planet's gravity can pull on its host star. This pull causes the star to move back and forth slightly.

People have wondered about other worlds for a long time. In the 1500s, Giordano Bruno thought other stars might have planets. Later, Isaac Newton also thought other stars might have similar systems. The first confirmed exoplanet was found in 1992. It orbited a pulsar, which is a very dense star. In 1995, scientists found the first exoplanet around a main-sequence star. This star was named 51 Pegasi.

There are many amazing facts about these planets. The nearest exoplanets are 4.2 light-years away. They orbit a star called Proxima Centauri. Some planets are very small, like the planet Draugr. It is about twice the mass of our Moon. Other planets are huge, like HR 2562 b. That planet is 30 times the mass of Jupiter. Some planets orbit their stars in less than one hour. Others take thousands of years to finish one orbit.

We look for planets in the habitable zone. This is often called the Goldilocks zone. It is the area where it is not too hot or too cold. In this zone, liquid water might exist on a planet's surface. Water is very important for life as we know it.

It also helps us search for extraterrestrial life in the universe. While many exoplanets orbit stars, some objects called rogue planets wander through space alone.

These rogue planets are not part of a planetary system. There may be billions of these wandering objects in the Milky Way galaxy.

Scientists use several methods to detect these far-away worlds. One common method is transit photometry. This happens when a planet passes directly in front of its host star. As the planet moves across the star, it blocks a small amount of light. This causes the star to appear slightly dimmer to our telescopes.

Another method is Doppler spectroscopy. In this process, scientists look for a star that appears to wobble. This wobble is caused by the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet.

These methods are very successful, but they have an observational bias. Most detected planets are found near their stars, meaning 85% are inside the tidal locking zone.

Exoplanets come in many different sizes and types. Some are very small, like the exoplanet Draugr. Draugr has a mass about twice that of our Moon. Other planets are massive giants. For example, HR 2562 b is about 30 times the mass of Jupiter. Some scientists debate if such massive objects are planets or brown dwarfs. A brown dwarf is an object that forms like a star through the gravitational collapse of gas clouds. Planets are thought to form differently, through a process called core accretion.

Humans have wondered about other worlds for centuries. In the 16th century, philosopher Giordano Bruno suggested that stars might have planets. Later, Isaac Newton also wrote about the possibility of similar systems around other stars. However, real proof took a long time to find. In 2016, researchers realized the first possible evidence of an exoplanet was actually noted in 1917. The first confirmed detection of an exoplanet occurred in 1992. These planets orbited a pulsar, which is a very dense star. The first detection around a main-sequence star happened in 1995 around the star 51 Pegasi.

Estimating the number of planets in our galaxy reveals how common they might be. There are about 200 billion stars in the Milky Way. If we assume about 50 billion of these are Sun-like stars, the numbers are huge. Scientists estimate that about 1 in 5 Sun-like stars has an Earth-sized planet in the habitable zone. This could mean there are 11 billion potentially habitable Earth-sized planets in our galaxy. If we include planets orbiting red dwarfs, that number could rise to 40 billion.
