The European Plain is a very large, flat area in Europe.

The European Plain is a huge, flat part of Europe.
Water plays a big part in this landscape.
This land has changed a lot over time.
The plain is split into two main parts. These are the North European Plain and the East European Plain. The North part is often called the Middle European Plain. The East part includes the Russian Plain. This Russian part covers almost all of European Russia. The land is not the same width everywhere. In the north, the plain is quite narrow. As you move toward the east, the land gets much wider. This makes the landscape feel very open and vast.
Because the land is so flat, it is very important for people. It is a great place for trade and big industries. The European Union uses the plain for much of its farming. It is also a major place for making renewable energy. However, the flat land can be hard for some countries. It offers very little protection from invaders. This has caused problems for places like Poland, France, and Russia. In the past, many armies used the open space to move. Today, the plain is home to many famous historical sites.
The European Plain, often called the Great European Plain, is a massive landform.
Geographically, the plain covers a huge amount of territory.
The elevation of the plain is generally quite low. Most of the land stays below 500 feet (152 metres) in height. The plain meets several different bodies of water along its edges. In the west and northwest, it touches the marginal seas of the Atlantic Ocean. To the northeast, it reaches the seas of the Arctic Ocean. In the southeast, the plain meets the Black Sea. To the south, the land rises into the Alps, the Carpathian Mountains, and the Balkan Mountains.
Historians and geographers divide the plain into two main sections. These are the North European Plain and the East European Plain. This division is based on history rather than geomorphology, which is the study of landforms. The North European Plain is also called the Middle European Plain. The East European Plain includes the Russian Plain. This Russian section covers nearly all of European Russia. The width of the plain changes across the continent. It is relatively narrow in northern Western Europe. However, it broadens significantly as it moves into western Russia.
Water systems are essential to the structure of the plain.
The ecology of the plain has changed due to human activity. Originally, the area was largely covered by thick, primeval forests. Human settlement led to deforestation, which is the clearing of trees. One of the largest remaining pieces of this old forest is the Białowieża Forest. This forest sits on the border between Poland and Belarus. Today, most of the plain sits in the temperate broadleaf and mixed forest biome. The far eastern portion transitions into the steppe of the Eurasian Steppe ecoregion. The plain is now the most agriculturally productive region in Europe.
The flatness of the plain has major geopolitical significance. This means it affects how countries interact and defend themselves. Because there are few mountains, the plain provides little geographic protection against invasion. This has been a constant challenge for countries like Russia, Poland, and France. For example, France has been invaded through the plain three times since 1870. Two of those invasions resulted in the country being occupied. Historically, the open space allowed armies to maneuver easily across the land.
Beyond military history, the plain is central to modern European life. It is a key region for trade and industry within the European Union. The EU's Common Agricultural Policy also heavily influences the plain because of its farming. The region is also a major center for producing renewable energy. Additionally, the plain is home to many important cultural and historical sites. Smaller plains also exist nearby, such as the Pannonian Basin and the Padana Plain. These areas show how diverse the lowlands of Europe can be.
