The dam works in a few important ways. One way is by making hydroelectric power. This is power made by using moving water. The power station has eight Kaplan turbines. These turbines can spin at 125 RPM. Each one can potentially make 103 MW of power. The dam also helps with irrigation. This means it sends water to farms on both sides of the river. The dam has also faced many difficult times. In 1974, Syria and Iraq had a big disagreement. Iraq was worried because they were getting much less water. The flow dropped from 1,100 cubic meters per second to 400. Saudi Arabia and the Soviet Union helped them reach a deal. Later, the dam was involved in fighting during wars. In 2017, bombs hit the dam during a military operation. This caused equipment to fail and stopped the dam from working. Engineers had to make emergency repairs to keep the dam from failing.

Irrigation is the process of supplying water to land to help crops grow. Both sides of the Euphrates River benefit from this water supply.

To understand how the dam works, we must look at its physical design and its power station. The dam is an earth-fill dam, meaning it is constructed using compacted earth and rock. It is long, high, and wide at both its base and its top. It was built in a location where rocky outcrops on either side of the valley are less than 1 kilometer apart. On the southern end of the dam sits a hydroelectric power station. This station uses eight Kaplan turbines to generate electricity. Because the area had been occupied since the Late Natufian period, many ancient sites existed there. Scientists launched a rescue excavation program to document these remains. Between 1965 and 1970, various international missions conducted systematic excavations. Countries including the United States, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Great Britain participated. They studied more than 25 different sites. One notable site is the castle of Qal'at Ja'bar.

As the lake rose, the hilltop castle became an island connected to the shore by a causeway. Many of the artifacts found during these missions are now kept in the National Museum of Aleppo.

The dam has also been at the center of important political and environmental discussions. In 1974, as Syria began filling the reservoir, the flow of the river was reduced. This caused a major dispute with Iraq, which is located downstream. Iraq saw its annual Euphrates flow drop from 1,100 cubic meters per second in 1973 to only 400 cubic meters per second in 1975.

Tensions grew high enough that troops were sent to the border. Eventually, Saudi Arabia and the Soviet Union mediated an agreement in 1975. Syria agreed to let 60 percent of the water flowing from the Turkey-Syria border go into Iraq.

In more recent years, the dam has faced significant challenges due to conflict. In 2013, the dam was captured by the Syrian opposition. Later, in 2014, it was captured by the Islamic State. During military operations in March 2017, the dam's towers were struck by bombs. This caused critical equipment to fail and stopped the dam from functioning. To prevent a catastrophic failure that could have flooded areas over 100 miles downstream, engineers had to perform emergency repairs. This required an unusual ceasefire between several fighting groups to allow the work to happen.

The Euphrates Dam remains a central part of the region's water and power systems. Even with its history of conflict, it is linked to other structures in the valley. For example, the Mansoura Dam was completed in 1986 downstream to help control floodwaters. The Tishrin Dam was also built to provide more hydroelectric power. These dams together manage the flow and energy of the Euphrates River. The dam continues to be a vital, though complex, piece of Syrian infrastructure.
