Math can help us find the best way to move.

Two men found these ideas in the 1750s. One man was Leonhard Euler. The other was Joseph-Louis Lagrange. They worked on a puzzle called the tautochrone problem.

This puzzle asks for a special curve. A weighted object falls along this curve to a fixed point. It takes the same amount of time no matter where it starts.

Lagrange solved this in 1755. He sent his work to Euler. They both worked to grow these ideas. This led to a field called the calculus of variations. Euler gave it that name in 1766.

The Euler–Lagrange equation helps solve optimization problems. These are tasks where you want to find the best path. You might want to find the shortest path between two points. In that case, the path is a straight line.

This math is very useful in science. It works like the laws of motion from Isaac Newton. It helps when the forces in a system are very hard to track. It also helps scientists study fields. It is a powerful tool for understanding how things change.
