These cities were very powerful and helped spread Greek culture. Some people think the Greek alphabet might have first been used here. Long ago, the island had many different names. It was called Macris or Doliche because of its long shape. Later, it was known as Negroponte by the Italians. This name means "Black Bridge."

The island has seen many changes and battles over the years. In 490 BC, the city of Eretria was ruined by Persian armies. Later, the island came under the control of Athens. Many years later, it was part of the Roman Republic. During the Middle Ages, the island was often ruled by different groups. For a time, the Venetian Republic held control of the island's trade. Eventually, the Ottoman Empire took over the island in 1470.

It is the second-largest island in Greece by area and population. In the Mediterranean Sea, it ranks as the sixth-largest island. The island is separated from Boeotia on the Greek mainland by several water features. These include the North Euboean Gulf and the South Euboean Gulf. The most famous separation point is the Euripus Strait. This strait is very narrow at its narrowest point. At the city of Chalcis, the strait is only 40 meters wide.

The geography of Euboea is defined by its long, narrow shape. It stretches from the northwest to the southeast. A large mountain range runs through the entire length of the island. This range is part of a larger chain of mountains. This chain includes the islands of Andros, Tinos, and Mykonos. The island is divided into three distinct geographic zones. The northern part is fertile and covered in forests. The central part is mountainous with agriculture in the valleys. The southern part of the island is barren and dry.

One of the most remarkable features is the Euripus Strait. The tides in this passage undergo extraordinary changes. These changes have been noted since classical times. At one moment, the current flows like a river in one direction. Shortly after, the current flows in the opposite direction with equal velocity. This phenomenon was so dangerous that sailors often bypassed Chalcis. They preferred to travel through the Euboic Sea instead. A bridge was eventually built at this location in 410 BC.

The history of Euboea is tied to its two main cities. Chalcis and Eretria were the most important urban centers. Both cities were settled by Ionian Greeks from Attica. These cities were very powerful and established many colonies. They founded settlements in places like Sicily and Macedonia. This helped extend the reach of Western Civilization. Some scholars believe the Greek alphabet was first used here around 775–750 BC. It is also suggested that the poet Homer may have lived on the island.

Euboea has experienced many conflicts and changes in leadership. In 490 BC, Persian armies destroyed the city of Eretria. Later, Athens gained control of the island to protect its trade. Athens used Euboea as a source of grain and cattle. The island eventually fell to Philip II of Macedon in 338 BC. It later became part of the Roman Republic in the second century BC. During the Middle Ages, the island was often ruled by different groups. After 1204, Lombard families divided the island into three baronies.

The island was also under the rule of the Venetian Republic. The Venetians controlled the island's commerce for a long time. In 1470, the Ottoman Empire captured the city of Negroponte. This was the name used for Chalcis during Venetian rule. The name Negroponte comes from the Italian term for "Black Bridge." During this era, many Albanians settled on the island. By 1687, some reports suggested many inhabitants were Albanian. However, other reports indicate that Greek populations remained in the south.

Today, the island remains a place of significant natural and historical interest. The climate is a hot-summer Mediterranean type. This means the summers are hot and dry. The winters are cool and wet. You can still see ancient influences in the landscape. There are many medieval churches and strong fortifications. For example, the town of Karystos has impressive castles.
