Cephalonia, also known as Kefalonia, is a major island in western Greece.

It is located within the Ionian Islands. It holds the title of the largest island in that group. Nationally, it is the sixth-largest island in Greece. This ranking follows Crete, Euboea, Lesbos, Rhodes, and Chios. The island serves as its own regional unit within the Ionian Islands region. Its two largest urban centers are the cities of Argostoli and Lixouri.

Ancient legends and history provide a complex foundation for the island. One myth connects the name Cephallenia to a figure named Cephalus. He was said to have been rewarded with the island of Same. Some scholars suggest Cephalonia might be the Homeric Ithaca. This is the legendary home of the hero Odysseus. A research project from 2007 to 2010 examined the peninsula of Paliki. It investigated if Paliki was a separate island during the late Bronze Age. This might explain the descriptions found in Homer's works.

During the Archaic and Classical periods, the island was organized into four city-states. These were Pale, Cranii, Same, and Pronnoi.

Each city-state functioned with significant independence. They minted their own coins and built monumental temples. They also constructed fortifications to protect their territories. These cities were active in the wider Greek world. For example, Melampous from the island won a contest at the Pythian Games in 582 BC. During the Peloponnesian War, all four cities allied with Athens. The island was strategically important due to its proximity to the Bay of Corinth.

Following the Classical era, the island saw many shifting powers. The Macedonian king Philip V invaded in 218 BC. Later, the Roman Republic conquered the city of Same in 189 BC after a long siege. After the Roman conquest, the island's strategic importance declined. However, the Roman period left behind lavish coastal villas. The emperor Hadrian even gifted the island to the city of Athens. In the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Empire used Cephalonia as a naval base. This helped block Muslim raids into the Adriatic Sea. The capital eventually moved to the more protected Castle of Saint George.

The island experienced long periods of foreign rule. The Venetians controlled the island for much of the time between 1500 and 1797. During this era, the island was a major global exporter of currants.

They also managed a large shipping fleet. In 1797, France took control following the dismantling of the Venetian Republic. This was followed by a period of Russian protection and the Septinsular Republic. The British then established a protectorate in 1815. British rule saw significant public works, such as the De Bosset Bridge.

Modern history brought significant conflict and natural challenges. During World War II, the island was occupied by Axis forces. Initially, Italian troops were the primary occupiers. However, a conflict arose between Italian and German forces in 1943. After the Italian armistice, German forces moved in to take control. This led to a siege at Argostoli and the execution of many Italian soldiers.

The island also faces geological instability. It sits near a major active fault zone. This is where the Eurasian Plate meets the Aegean Plate. This transform boundary causes thrust faults that lead to uplift. A series of earthquakes struck the island in 1953, causing significant damage.

Today, Cephalonia is a place of diverse geological and historical interest. It features unique landmarks like the Melissani Cave.
