Sometimes people think their way is best.

People often judge other groups by their own rules. This idea is called ethnocentrism. The word comes from two Greek words. "Ethnos" means nation. "Kentron" means center.

Ethnocentrism is a way of looking at the world. It happens when people use their own culture to judge others. They use their own rules, beliefs, and customs as a yardstick. This can lead to negative thoughts about other people. Some might think their own way of life is the only correct way. This can make other cultures seem strange or even wrong. It is a big idea in social science and anthropology.
This idea works by creating an "in-group" and an "out-group." The in-group is the group a person belongs to. The out-group is any group that is different. People often feel a strong bond with their own group. This is called social identification. They might feel pride or loyalty to their own people. However, they may also feel hostility toward the out-group. This can create social boundaries between different types of people.
The word comes from two Greek words. "Ethnos" means nation and "kentron" means center. A Polish sociologist named Ludwig Gumplowicz helped make the term famous in the 19th century. He thought groups often believed they were the highest in history. Later, an American named William G. Sumner wrote about it in 1906. He wrote a book called Folkways. He said ethnocentrism makes one's own group the center of everything.
History shows many examples of this way of thinking. In the 19th century, some people tried to rank different cultures. They often used Western societies as the standard for being "civilized." They used words like "primitive" or "savage" to describe others. This was often linked to colonization. Some thinkers even believed certain societies were more likely to survive. These ideas were often unfair and did not show the true value of other cultures.
Many scholars worked hard to change these views. An anthropologist named Franz Boas fought against these old ideas. He wrote a book called The Mind of Primitive Man in 1911. He argued that no race or culture is inferior to another. He helped teach a new idea called cultural relativism. This means trying to understand a culture through its own eyes. This helps us study the world in a fair and unbiased way.
Ethnocentrism is a concept used in social science and anthropology. It describes the habit of using one's own culture as a frame of reference. People use their own standards to judge the practices and beliefs of others. This often leads to negative judgments about different groups. Some people believe their own culture is superior or more "normal" than others. This can affect how people view language, religion, and customs.
The mechanism of ethnocentrism relies on social identification. This process creates a distinction between an "in-group" and an "out-group." The in-group is the social group to which a person belongs. The out-group consists of all other groups that are different. Social theorists like Theodor W. Adorno noted this differentiation. It combines a positive attitude toward the in-group with a negative attitude toward the out-group. This creates social boundaries that define who belongs to a specific group.
There are different ways to analyze how ethnocentrism functions. At the individual level, it can explain specific personality traits. It can manifest as in-group cohesion or out-group hostility. At the intergroup level, it often appears as a consequence of conflict between groups. It can also play a role in how people construct their own identities. By excluding the out-group, individuals can more clearly define their own social position. This process can be enhanced by interethnic competition or violence.
The term has a specific linguistic origin. It comes from two Greek words: "ethnos," meaning nation, and "kentron," meaning center. Polish sociologist Ludwig Gumplowicz is believed to have coined or popularized the term in the 19th century. He compared ethnocentrism to the idea of geocentrism. He argued that groups often believed they occupied the highest point in history. In 1906, American sociologist William G. Sumner brought the term into mainstream science. He defined it as a view where one's own group is the center of everything.
History provides many examples of ethnocentric thinking. In the 19th century, many anthropologists tried to rank cultures. They used Western milestones like technology or monotheistic religion as benchmarks. This was often influenced by colonization. Some thinkers, like Herbert Spencer, used the concept of "survival of the fittest" to support these views. Others, like the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, argued that "primitive" societies should welcome Westernization. This era saw the use of derogatory terms like "savage" to describe non-Western societies.
Many scholars worked to challenge these inaccurate rankings. Anthropologist Franz Boas was a major figure in this movement. In his 1911 book, *The Mind of Primitive Man*, he argued against the idea that race determines cultural capacity. He believed that different civilizations have different values based on their own traditions. Boas and his colleagues promoted the idea of cultural relativism. This is the principle of studying societies without using a developmental scale. It encourages researchers to understand a culture through its own perspective.
Cultural relativism serves as the direct opposite of ethnocentrism. It is a guiding philosophy for modern social science. Scholars like Bronisław Malinowski used this to develop new methods. Malinowski created the theory of functionalism to help produce non-ethnocentric studies. Other researchers, such as Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict, also applied these ideas. While some of their early work faced criticism, they helped move anthropology away from biased rankings. Today, understanding ethnocentrism helps scientists avoid the biases that can blind their conclusions.
