A scientist named Eduard Rüppell first described the species in 1835. He even provided a skull for the British Museum. Later, the famous scientist Charles Darwin thought these wolves might be related to greyhounds. In the early 1900s, Major Percy Powell-Cotton brought skins to England from Abyssinia. The wolves were recognized as needing protection in 1938. By 1974, they officially received protection. In the 1980s, the Bale Mountains Research Project began the first deep studies.

In 2011, experts estimated there were only 360 to 440 adult wolves. Most of these live in the Bale Mountains. The wolves face hard jobs to survive. Expanding human populations cause habitat degradation through overgrazing. They also face diseases like rabies from free-ranging dogs. In the 1990s, a rabies epidemic and shooting hurt the packs in Web Valley. Because of these dangers, the IUCN listed them as critically endangered in 1994. They were later moved back to endangered in 2004 after populations recovered.

There are two recognized subspecies of the Ethiopian wolf. The northern subspecies, *C. s. simensis*, lives in the Northwest Rift Valley, including the Simien Mountains and Mount Guna.

The southern subspecies, *C. s. citernii*, inhabits the Southeast Rift Valley, specifically the Arsi and Bale Mountains. While the southern subspecies is known for a very bright red coat, scientists note that this color can vary. One consistent difference is that the southern subspecies has nasal bones that are longer than those of the northern subspecies.

Scientific interest in the species began in 1835 when Eduard Rüppell first described it. Rüppell even provided a specimen skull to the British Museum. In the mid-19th century, travelers in Abyssinia recorded local beliefs that wearing wolf skin could cause death if hair entered a wound. Even Charles Darwin studied the species, hypothesizing that it might have given rise to greyhounds.

In 2011, the adult population was estimated to be between 360 and 440 individuals, with more than half living in the Bale Mountains. The species faces several major threats, including habitat degradation from overgrazing by expanding human populations. It also faces dangers from disease, such as rabies, which can spread from free-ranging domestic dogs. In the 1990s, a combination of shooting and a severe rabies epidemic in the Web Valley and Sanetti Plateau led the IUCN to classify the species as critically endangered. However, after the Bale populations recovered, the status was moved back to endangered in 2004.

Evolutionary studies provide a fascinating look at how this wolf came to be. Fossil evidence from the Melka Wakena site suggests that the ancestors of the Ethiopian wolf arrived in Africa from Eurasia approximately 1.8 million years ago.

DNA analysis shows that the Ethiopian wolf is more closely related to the grey wolf and the coyote than to other African canids. It is believed to be an evolutionary relic of a grey wolf-like ancestor that once invaded northern Africa. About 15,000 years ago, changing climates caused its Afroalpine habitat to fragment, which isolated the different wolf populations from one another.

Today, conservation efforts are led by the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme, a partnership between Oxford University and the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority.
