There is a famous story about how the church began. A man named Gregory the Illuminator is a patron saint of Armenia. Tradition says he had a vision from heaven. He saw a light come down to strike the earth. This vision showed him where to build the church. Because of this, the name Etchmiadzin means "the Descent of the Only-Begotten."

The building has changed many times over the centuries. It was first built around the year 301 or 303. It was built on the site of an older temple. A Persian invasion caused the original church to be damaged. In 483, a man named Vahan Mamikonian rebuilt the core. This reconstruction gave the building its cross shape.

History has brought both hard times and new growth. In 1604, Shah Abbas I of Persia took some stones and holy relics. He wanted to move the center of the faith to New Julfa. Later, the cathedral saw many new renovations. In the late 1600s, people added belfries to the site. In 1868, a museum and room for relics was built.
