Sometimes we want to know a number, but it is hidden. We can use a rule to guess it. This rule is called an estimator.

Estimator vs Estimate

The guess the rule makes is called an estimate.

There are two main ways to guess. A point estimator gives just one single value. An interval estimator gives a range of possible values.

Think about shooting arrows at a target. The bull's-eye is the true number. The arrows are your estimates.

Good estimator
Good estimator

A rule is unbiased if the guesses stay on target. This means the average guess hits the bull's-eye. A rule has low variance if the arrows stay close together.

Bad estimator
Bad estimator

Even if arrows miss the target, they can still be close together. We want a rule that is both steady and on target. This helps us find the best answer. Scientists use these rules to learn about things like leaves or many other patterns.
