It is surrounded by several different areas and bodies of water. To the north, it shares borders with Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. The North Sea lies to the east, providing a long coastline. To the south, the Thames Estuary separates Essex from Kent. The county is bordered by Greater London to the south-west and Hertfordshire to the west.

It is generally a low-lying area with a flat landscape.

The geography of Essex includes diverse environments and water features. The coastline is one of the longest in England, measuring 562 miles (905 km). This coast is deeply indented by many estuaries. These are places where rivers meet the sea. The largest estuaries include the Stour, Colne, Blackwater, Crouch, and the Thames. Some coastal areas consist of wetlands and salt marshes, such as Hamford Water. The county also contains pockets of ancient woodland. Examples include Epping Forest in the south-west and the Dedham Vale area in the north-east.

Human settlement in Essex varies significantly by region. The southern part of the county is densely populated. This area includes the large settlements of Southend-on-Sea and Basildon. In contrast, the centre and north are more rural. Principal settlements in these quieter areas include Chelmsford and Colchester. Interestingly, three locations in the county hold city status. These are the districts of Chelmsford, Colchester, and Southend-on-Sea. For local government, the county is divided into twelve districts and two unitary authority areas: Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea.

The history of Essex begins with the Trinovantes tribe during the Iron Age. They were an advanced group that produced their own coinage. Their capital was an oppidum, which is a type of town, located at Colchester. Colchester is recognized as the oldest recorded town in Britain. By AD 10, the Trinovantes lost control to the Catuvellauni tribe. In AD 43, the Romans invaded Britain. A massive force of 30,000 men arrived to take Colchester. This force included four legions, mounted auxiliaries, and an elephant corps.

Colchester became a vital Roman center known as Colonia Claudia Victricensis. This name means "the City of Claudius' Victory." The Romans built a massive temple to the Emperor Claudius there. This was the largest building of its kind in Roman Britain. However, the Trinovantes later joined the Iceni in the Boudiccan revolt. They attacked the city and destroyed the temple of Claudius. Following this, the Romans eventually regained control. Later, Christianity began to flourish in the region during the fourth century. Archaeological finds like gold rings and etched tiles support this.

The Anglo-Saxon period gave the county its modern name. The name Essex comes from the "East Saxons." These were the eastern kingdom of the Saxons who settled in Britain. The first known king of the East Saxons was Sledd in 587. Many early kings were notable for using names starting with the letter S. The kingdom originally included much more land, such as Middlesex and parts of Hertfordshire. After the Norman Conquest, many castles were built to protect the new ruling class.

In the later centuries, Essex became closely tied to London's economy. The nineteenth century brought major changes through the development of railways. These railways allowed coastal resorts like Clacton-on-Sea to grow. The Port of London also shifted its operations downriver to Tilbury. Modern Essex features new towns like Basildon and Harlow. The area is also home to the Harwich International Port and a petroleum industry.
