Erik is known as the father of lichenology. Lichenology is the study of lichens. Lichens are living things that often grow on trees. Before Erik, people put all lichens into one big group. Much of this massive collection is preserved today in the Botanical Museum of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. He also shared his work through several major publications. These included *Lichenographiae Sueciae Prodromus* in 1798 and the influential *Lichenographia universalis* in 1810. 
Acharius's academic journey began in Gävle, Sweden, where he was born in 1757. He received a private education before attending Gävle Gymnasium in 1770. In 1773, he matriculated at Uppsala University to study natural history and medicine. It was here that he became the last pupil of the famous Carl Linnaeus. Acharius defended his dissertation, *Planta Aphyteia*, under Linnaeus himself. This dissertation focused on a vascular plant species called *Hydnora* from Southern Africa. Interestingly, Linnaeus had incorrectly classified this plant as a fungus. This distinction marked Acharius as a vital link in the history of Swedish botany.
Beyond his botanical research, Acharius led a professional life in medicine and administration. After graduating from Uppsala in 1776, he worked for the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. He completed his medical studies at Lund University in 1782. Acharius held several important positions in Vadstena, including town medical officer and district medical officer for Östergötland County. In 1795, he became the director of the new Vadstena Hospital, an institution he had helped initiate. 
Acharius's influence spread rapidly across Europe through a network of scientific correspondence. He maintained a long-term professional relationship with Olof Swartz, another Linnaean disciple. Between 1780 and 1815, the two men exchanged nearly 350 letters. Swartz helped introduce Acharius to international figures like James Edward Smith, the head of the Linnean Society. Because of this exposure, Acharius was inducted as a foreign member of the Linnean Society in 1801. His work also deeply impacted other pioneers, such as William Borrer in Britain. Borrer used Acharius's specimens and publications as the foundation for his own lichenological research.
Today, the legacy of Erik Acharius remains central to the field of biology. Many of his original classification schemas are still utilized in modern lichen taxonomy. To honor his contributions, the International Association of Lichenology established the Acharius Medal for lifetime achievement.
