He is best known for his massive influence during World War I. He helped direct Germany's entire military strategy and war effort. Later, his political actions contributed to the rise of the Nazi Party. His life moved from successful military command to controversial political leadership. Understanding Ludendorff helps explain the complex history of early 20th-century Germany.

Ludendorff grew up on a small family farm in Kruszewnia.

He was the third of six children born to August Wilhelm Ludendorff. His mother, Klara, came from a family with noble connections. Erich showed a natural talent for mathematics during his early schooling. This skill helped him excel in his military education. He entered the Cadet School with distinction and was placed in an advanced class. He eventually attended the German War Academy near Berlin. In 1894, he was recommended for the prestigious General Staff Corps.

As a staff officer, Ludendorff focused on detailed military planning. He worked in the Great General Staff in Berlin under Alfred von Schlieffen.

In this role, he helped develop the Schlieffen Plan. This plan involved moving massive amounts of troops into specific positions. Ludendorff even conducted secret surveys of fortifications in Russia, France, and Belgium. He specifically studied the Belgian city of Liège in 1911. He also lobbied the government for more army corps to support these plans. His work required intense organization and careful logistical calculations.

World War I brought Ludendorff sudden fame and immense power. In August 1914, he led a successful assault on Liège, Belgium.

This victory earned him the Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest military decoration. He soon joined General Paul von Hindenburg on the Eastern Front. Together, they achieved a massive victory at the Battle of Tannenberg. This battle resulted in 92,000 Russian prisoners. They also won a major victory at the Masurian Lakes. These successes established the pair as legendary military leaders in Germany.

By August 1916, Ludendorff's influence reached its peak. He successfully lobbied for Hindenburg to lead the Supreme Army Command.

Ludendorff was then promoted to First Quartermaster General. In this position, he and Hindenburg established a military dictatorship in all but name. Ludendorff directed almost every aspect of Germany's military strategy. He secured a victory against Russia on the Eastern Front. He also launched major offensives on the Western Front. However, these gains were reversed by late 1918 during the Allies' Hundred Days Offensive. Faced with military collapse and revolution, Kaiser Wilhelm II forced Ludendorff to resign.

After the war, Ludendorff became a prominent nationalist leader. He promoted the "stab-in-the-back" myth to explain Germany's defeat. This theory claimed that Marxists, Freemasons, and Jews had betrayed the nation.

He used his influence to participate in two failed uprisings. These were the Kapp Putsch in 1920 and the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. These events helped the Nazi Party gain momentum. Ludendorff also ran for president in 1925 but lost the election. His political career was defined by his attempts to reshape Germany through nationalism.

In his final years, Ludendorff turned toward military theory. He wrote a famous book titled "The Total War." In this work, he argued that a nation must always be prepared for conflict. He believed that peace was simply a short interval between wars.

He lived in Munich until he died of liver cancer in 1937. Although he requested no ceremony, Adolf Hitler organized a state funeral for him. This connection highlights how Ludendorff's earlier actions impacted the future of Germany. His life remains a study of how military power can transform into political influence.
