Its name means the "Honour Division" or "Premier Division." People love this league because it brings together the best clubs in the country. It is currently ranked as the sixth-best league in Europe by UEFA. Winning the league is a huge deal because the winner becomes the Dutch national champion. This competition brings great joy and pride to the fans who watch every match.

Each season follows a specific way of working. There are 18 clubs in the league. Every club meets every other club twice during the year. They play one game at their own home stadium. Then, they travel to play one game away at the other team's field. At the end of the season, the two clubs at the bottom are relegated. This means they move down to the second level, called the First Division. Meanwhile, the top two teams are promoted up to the Eredivisie.

This league has a long and interesting history. Before 1956, football in the Netherlands was mostly amateur. This meant players did not get paid to play. In the early 1950s, many players moved to other countries to earn money. After a big flood in 1953, Dutch players played a famous charity match in Paris. They won 2–1 against the French team, which showed how great professional football could be. The Eredivisie was finally founded in 1956 to give the best 18 clubs a place to play directly for the title.

Some clubs have become legendary over the years. Three teams are known as the "Big Three" or the "Traditional Top Three." These are Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord. Ajax has won the most titles with 36 wins. PSV Eindhoven follows with 26 titles. Feyenoord has won 16 titles. These three clubs are special because they have never been relegated from the league. Other teams like AZ Alkmaar and Twente have also won titles since 1965.

Watching the Eredivisie is a big event for many people. Fans fill large stadiums to cheer for their favorite teams. In the 2018–19 season, the average attendance was 18,010 people. Ajax has one of the largest crowds, with 52,987 people attending games. The league has had many different names due to sponsors. It was once called the PTT Telecompetitie and later the KPN Eredivisie. Today, it is known as the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, which is a name it will keep for the 2025–2026 season.

Its name translates to the "Honour Division" or "Premier Division." This league represents the pinnacle of Dutch football, bringing together the most skilled clubs in the nation. As of the 2024–25 season, UEFA ranks it as the sixth-best league in all of Europe. For the players and fans, it is a competition defined by intense skill and national pride. The winner of the Eredivisie is crowned the Dutch national champion.

The league operates through a structured system of matches and movement. Currently, the Eredivisie consists of 18 professional clubs. Each club plays every other club twice during a single season. They play one match at their home stadium and one match away at the opponent's field. This ensures every team faces the same level of competition. At the end of the season, the two clubs at the bottom are relegated. Relegation means they move down to the second level, known as the First Division. Conversely, the champion and the runner-up are automatically promoted into the Eredivisie.

There are also complex rules for teams in the middle of the standings. The club that finishes in third place from the bottom enters a series of promotion/relegation play-offs. They compete against six high-placed clubs from the First Division. This system creates many opportunities for teams to move between the different levels of the Dutch football league system. The structure keeps the competition intense for almost every team in the league. Even teams not fighting for the title must play carefully to avoid the play-offs.

The history of Dutch football changed significantly during the mid-20th century. Before 1954, the national championship was an amateur competition. The Royal Dutch Football Association, or KNVB, did not allow players to receive salaries. This led many talented players to move to foreign leagues to earn money. In 1953, following the North Sea flood, Dutch players organized a charity match in Paris. They defeated the French national team 2–1. This victory proved the high quality of professional Dutch players. This event helped push the KNVB to accept semi-professionalism during the "slaapkamerconferentie," or bedroom conference, in 1954.

Following a merger between two different football federations in November 1954, a new competition emerged. The Eredivisie was officially founded in 1956 to replace the old regional league system. This allowed the eighteen best clubs to play directly for the title without using play-offs. The very first season in 1956–57 was won by Ajax. Since that time, the league has seen various changes in its membership and name. The league has had many sponsors, including PTT Telecom and KPN. From the 2025–2026 season, the league will be officially rebranded as the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie.

Certain clubs have achieved legendary status through consistent success. Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord are known as the "Big Three" or the "Traditional Top Three." These three clubs are the only ones in their current form to have never been relegated. Ajax holds the record for the most titles with 36 wins. PSV Eindhoven follows with 26 titles, and Feyenoord has won 16. Since 1965, these three giants have won almost every title. Only three other clubs, AZ and Twente, have broken their dominance in recent decades.

Football in the Eredivisie also draws massive crowds to stadiums across the country. In the 2018–19 season, the average attendance was 18,010 people per match. Some clubs have much larger fanbases than others. Ajax has the largest attendance, reaching 52,987 people. Feyenoord and PSV also draw very large crowds. In contrast, smaller clubs like Excelsior had an average attendance of 4,223. This high level of interest helps drive the economy of the sport. It also connects the clubs deeply to their local cities and communities.
