Erbium

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Erbium is a special chemical element used in many modern tools. It is a silvery-white metal that is quite soft and easy to shape.

You will not find pure erbium sitting alone in nature. Instead, it is always found mixed with other elements in the Earth. It belongs to a group called the lanthanides, which are known as rare-earth elements. Because it is rare, it can be quite difficult to find and separate. This metal is very important for how we send information around the world.

One of the most amazing things about erbium is how it handles light. It contains pink-colored Er3+ ions that have a property called fluorescence.

This means they can glow when they are hit by light. Scientists use these ions to make optical amplifiers for fiber optic cables. The process works by using a light source to pump the ions. Then, the ions release light in a way called stimulated emission. This helps signals travel through long glass fibers with very little loss. This is how much of our internet data moves so quickly.

Doctors also use the power of erbium in medicine. They often use a specific tool called an Er:YAG laser.

This laser is very helpful because its energy is absorbed by water. Since our skin and teeth have a lot of water, the laser stays near the surface. This makes it very safe for shallow laser surgery. In dentistry, the laser can even produce steam. This steam helps doctors clean or remove tooth enamel very precisely. It is a very helpful way to work on teeth.

Learning about erbium took many years of hard work by scientists. A man named Carl Gustaf Mosander discovered it in 1843.

He was studying a mineral called gadolinite from a mine in Ytterby, Sweden. Because the mine was in Ytterby, the element took that name. At first, scientists were actually confused about the names of different elements. They even switched the names of erbia and terbia by mistake! It was not until 1905 that Georges Urbain and Charles James got pure erbium oxide. Pure erbium metal was not even made until 1934.

Today, we find erbium in specific minerals and places. It is often found in monazite sand or in special clays.

Most of the world's supply now comes from ion adsorption clays in southern China. This makes China the main supplier of erbium for the whole world. Even though it is rare, we use it every day in our technology. From the internet to the dentist's office, erbium helps things work. It is a tiny element that makes a huge difference in our lives.
