Imagine a balance scale with two pans.

If you put the same weight in each pan, the scale stays perfectly level. An equation works in this exact same way. It is a mathematical statement that shows two expressions are equal. We connect these two sides using an equals sign. The side on the left is called the left-hand side. The side on the right is called the right-hand side. When the two sides match, the equation is in balance.

To keep an equation balanced, you must follow certain rules. If you add a weight to one pan, you must add the same weight to the other. You can also subtract the same amount from both sides. You can even multiply or divide both sides by the same number. This keeps the equality true. If you do something to only one side, the scale tips and the equality is lost. These rules help mathematicians find the right answers. They are the basis for many ways to solve math puzzles.

People have used these ideas for a very long time. A man named Robert Recorde changed how we write them. In 1557, he invented the equals sign.

He chose two parallel lines of the same length. He thought nothing could be more equal than those lines. Long before him, other cultures used similar ideas. For example, an ancient Chinese book called The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art described ways to solve equations.

Equations often use letters to stand for numbers we do not know yet. We call these letters unknowns or variables.

Finding the value of these letters is called solving the equation. The correct answer is called a solution. Some equations are identities, which means they are true for every number you try. Other equations are conditional. These are only true for specific numbers. You might also see a system of equations.

This is a group of equations that must all be true at the same time.

Math uses equations to describe the world around us. We can use them to define shapes like circles.

An equation can tell us exactly where every point on a circle sits. We can also use them to see where two lines cross each other.
