It was originally written in a language called Koine Greek. This letter is a type of writing called an epistle, which is a formal letter. It was meant to reach a wide audience of Jewish people. These people were living in the diaspora, which means they lived far from their original homeland. The letter aims to give them advice on how to live well.

The letter works by giving moral advice to its readers. It covers many different topics like pride, hypocrisy, and favoritism. One of its biggest ideas is that true faith must be shown through works. This means that what a person believes should lead them to do good things. For example, the letter encourages people to care for the poor. It also teaches the importance of prayer and being humble. The writing can sometimes jump quickly from one idea to another.

People have long debated who actually wrote this letter. Many people follow the tradition that James, the brother of Jesus, was the author. Some think he might have used a helper to write in Greek. However, many modern scholars have a different view. They believe the letter might be pseudonymous. This means someone else wrote it using James's name. They think this because the Greek used in the letter is very sophisticated.

There are many important facts about the history of this text. The earliest copies we have come from the 3rd century. Some of these include Papyrus 20 and Papyrus 23. We also have the famous Codex Sinaiticus from around 330 CE. The letter was not always widely accepted by everyone. During the Reformation, Martin Luther even called it an "epistle of straw." He had concerns about how it talked about faith and works.

The Epistle of James connects to many other types of writing. It is similar to Jewish wisdom literature, like the books of Proverbs. It also shares ideas with the sayings of Jesus found in other books. Some scholars see it as a collection of small essays. Others believe it follows a very careful plan. It even shows influences from Greek and Roman ways of speaking. This makes it a very interesting piece of history to study.
