Enzyme unit

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Enzymes are tiny helpers that speed up changes. Scientists need a way to measure this work. They use the enzyme unit, or U. This unit measures catalytic activity. Catalytic activity is how fast an enzyme works.

It helps us know how strong an enzyme is. This measurement is very important for science.

One enzyme unit has a specific job. It is the amount of enzyme that changes one micromole of substrate every minute. A substrate is the thing the enzyme works on.

This happens under very specific conditions. These conditions include the right temperature and pH level. Scientists often use a temperature of 25°C for these tests. The right setup helps the enzyme work at its best.

Groups of scientists helped create this system. The International Union of Biochemistry adopted the enzyme unit in 1964.

Later, a group called the 1978 General Conference on Weights and Measures made a suggestion. They recommended a different unit called the katal. The katal was officially adopted in 1999. However, most scientists still prefer the enzyme unit today.

The katal works differently than the enzyme unit. One katal measures how much substrate changes in just one second. Because enzyme tests usually last for minutes, the enzyme unit is easier to use.

One enzyme unit equals 16.67 nanokatal. This is a very small amount. The name "international unit" can also cause some confusion. This name is used for two different things in science.

One type of international unit measures enzymes. The other type measures biopharmaceuticals like vitamins and hormones.

These two units have the same name but no link. For example, an IU of the enzyme catalase is not related to an IU of vitamin C. Each substance has its own special standard. It is important to know which unit a scientist is using. This keeps the science clear and correct.
