Some species of entelodont were among the largest mammals in their ecosystems. The North American species Daeodon is a well-known example. It could reach an estimated weight of 750 kg, which is about 1,650 pounds. 
The study of entelodonts helps scientists understand the complex history of artiodactyl evolution. By comparing their physical traits to genetic data, researchers have rewritten the family tree. They moved entelodonts from the pig lineage to a group closer to modern cetaceans and hippos. This shows how much our understanding of life changes as new technology becomes available. The transition from looking only at bones to looking at DNA has provided a much clearer picture of how these ancient giants lived and related to the animals we see today.
