Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine. It focuses on the endocrine system. This system uses glands to send messages. These glands release chemicals called hormones. Hormones travel directly into the blood. They do not use a duct system.

This system manages many important jobs. It helps with growth and development. It also controls sleep and digestion. Hormones can even affect your mood and stress levels.

How does this system work? It uses a way called feedback. This keeps the body in balance. One hormone might control another hormone. For example, thyroid stimulating hormone controls thyroid hormone. If there is too much thyroid hormone, the body sends a signal. This is called negative feedback. It tells the first hormone to slow down.

This process helps maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is a steady state for the body. One hormone can affect many different organs. One organ can also respond to many hormones.

People have studied this for a long time. The earliest studies began in China. By 200 BC, they used hormones for medicine. They used complex methods to find them. In 1849, Arnold Berthold made a big discovery. He studied cockerels, which are male chickens. He noticed that castrated birds changed.

He found that replacing testes changed their behavior. This helped people understand how glands work. Scientists later learned about many different hormone types.

There are three main classes of hormones. Amines come from single amino acids. Examples include dopamine and epinephrine. Peptide and protein hormones are different. They are made of many amino acid residues. Insulin is a famous peptide hormone.

The third class is steroid hormones. These are made from cholesterol. Some hormones, like T3 and T4, are special. They are part of the amine class. They come from combining two amino acids.

An endocrinologist is a special doctor. They treat many different health problems. They help with diabetes mellitus. This is a condition involving blood sugar. They also treat thyroid disorders. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck.

Some doctors help with adrenal disorders. These glands sit on top of the kidneys. They help the body respond to stress. Other doctors help with bone or reproductive issues. These specialists use blood tests to find the right treatment.
