William Herschel discovered the moon on August 28, 1789. He used a huge 40-foot telescope in England. Later, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Saturn in 1980 and 1981. The Cassini spacecraft arrived later to study it even more closely. Cassini began many flybys starting in 2005. This mission helped us see the plumes and the surface in great detail.

Scientists have found many important facts about this moon. In 2014, NASA reported that a large ocean exists under the ice. This subsurface ocean is made of liquid water. Near the south polar region, Enceladus exhibits intense geological activity. It contains cryovolcanoes, which are volcanoes that erupt volatiles like water instead of molten rock. These cryovolcanoes shoot geyser-like jets of water vapour, molecular hydrogen, and other materials into space.

These jets can move about 250 kilograms of material every second. They also eject solid particles, including ice and sodium chloride crystals.

This geological activity is driven by a process called orbital resonance. Enceladus is in a 2:1 mean-motion orbital resonance with the moon Dione. This means Enceladus completes two orbits around Saturn for every one orbit completed by Dione. This resonance maintains the orbital eccentricity of Enceladus, which is a measure of how non-circular its orbit is. This forced eccentricity causes tidal deformation as the moon moves through Saturn's gravity. The resulting tidal forces create internal heat through friction. This heat powers the cryovolcanic eruptions and keeps the interior active.

Scientists have discovered that much of the material from these plumes stays in space. While some water vapour falls back to the surface as snow, much of it escapes. This escaping material supplies most of the substance that makes up Saturn's E ring.

The E ring is the widest and outermost major ring of Saturn. It is a diffuse disk made of microscopic icy or dusty material. Because the ring is unstable, it must be constantly replenished. The Cassini spacecraft confirmed that Enceladus is the primary source of these particles.

One of the most significant findings involves a massive subsurface ocean. In 2014, NASA reported evidence for a global ocean of liquid water beneath the ice. This ocean is estimated to have a thickness of around 30 kilometers. Cassini's chemical analysis of the plumes also found evidence for hydrothermal activity. This suggests that heat and chemicals are interacting at the ocean floor. This environment might be habitable to microorganisms similar to those found near hydrothermal vents on Earth.

The internal structure of Enceladus is also quite complex. While early estimates suggested it was mostly water ice, Cassini found a higher density of 1.61 g/cm3. This higher density indicates a greater percentage of silicates and iron than other icy moons. The moon likely has a differentiated interior with an icy mantle and a rocky core. The core may contain water, which helps explain the low density measured by gravity data. This combination of a rocky core, a liquid ocean, and tidal heating makes Enceladus a vital subject for studying the potential for life in our Solar System.
