Imagine you have a bag. Usually, a bag holds toys or snacks. But what if the bag is empty? In math, we call this the empty set.

A set is just a group of things. The empty set is a special group with zero things inside.

There is only one empty set. This is because any set with no items is the same as any other. We call sets with items "non-empty" sets.

Math experts use a special sign for it. The sign looks like a circle with a slash: ∅. This sign was made in 1939. It was inspired by letters used in Denmark and Norway.

The empty set is very useful. It helps us build numbers. For example, we can use it to make the number zero. We can even use it to build all other numbers. It is also a part of every other set. This might sound strange, but it is true. Even if a set is big, the empty set fits inside it. It is a small but mighty part of math.
