His life is defined by his long involvement in the struggle for independence and his rise through the ranks of the ZANU–PF party. Mnangagwa has been a central figure in Zimbabwean politics for several decades. He has held many different roles, including cabinet minister and first vice-president. His political journey has been marked by both leadership and significant controversy.

Mnangagwa was born on 15 September 1942 in Shabani, Southern Rhodesia. He belonged to the Karanga people, a subgroup of the Shona ethnic group. His family was large, and his parents, Mafidhi and Mhurai, were politically active farmers. In 1952, his father's political activism led to his arrest by a white land development officer. As a result, the family moved to Northern Rhodesia in 1955. While living in Mumbwa, Mnangagwa met Robert Mugabe. Mugabe became a major influence on his political views.

Mnangagwa's education shaped his identity and his political activism. He attended several schools, including Myooye School and Mumbwa Boarding School. He later enrolled at Hodgson Technical College to study industrial building. It was during his school years that he adopted the name "Emmerson" from a book by Ralph Waldo Emerson. His activism grew during his time at college. In 1960, he was expelled from Hodgson after being found guilty of setting fire to a building. He later worked in construction and served as a youth league secretary.

His involvement in the liberation struggle involved international training and military groups. In 1962, he joined the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU). He received military training in Tanganyika, specifically in Mbeya and Iringa. Later, he joined the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), a breakaway group. Mnangagwa traveled to Egypt for training at the Egyptian Military Academy. He also spent time in China, studying at Peking University's School of Marxism. He studied military engineering and combat training in Nanjing before returning to Africa.

Upon his return, Mnangagwa co-founded the Crocodile Gang.

This was a ZANLA guerrilla unit composed of men he had trained in China. The group's mission was to smuggle weapons and recruit new members. They traveled on foot between Salisbury and Mutoko to expand the movement. Mnangagwa's activities with this group eventually led to his arrest. He was imprisoned for ten years following a bombing near Fort Victoria. After his release, he moved to Zambia to study law and practice as an attorney.

After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, Mnangagwa held several senior positions under Robert Mugabe. From 1980 to 1988, he was the first minister of state security. In this role, he oversaw the Central Intelligence Organisation. His tenure is controversial due to his role in the Gukurahundi massacres. During these events, thousands of Ndebele civilians were killed in the Matabeleland region.

He later served as Minister of Justice and as Speaker of the Parliament. He also worked as the Minister of Defence and Minister of Rural Housing.

Mnangagwa's path to the presidency involved a major political shift in 2017. He had been serving as Mugabe's first vice-president since 2014. However, internal political conflicts arose between his faction and the faction led by Grace Mugabe. In November 2017, Mugabe dismissed Mnangagwa from his positions. Mnangagwa fled to South Africa, but a coup d'état soon followed. Backed by General Constantino Chiwenga and the military, the coup led to Mugabe's resignation. Mnangagwa then returned to Zimbabwe to assume the presidency.

Since taking office, Mnangagwa has won two major elections. He secured his first full term in the 2018 general election. He was re-elected in the 2023 general election, receiving 52.6% of the vote.
