Colombia is one of the largest producers in the world. They have three main mining areas: Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Colombia is also home to rare trapiche emeralds. These have dark lines that look like spokes on a wheel. Zambia is the second largest producer of emeralds. In 2004, Zambia provided 20 percent of the world's gem-quality stones. It allows us to trace a single stone back to its specific geological home.

Humans can also create emeralds in laboratories through synthetic processes. One method is called flux-growth. The scientist Carroll Chatham used a lithium vanadate flux process to create successful synthetics. Another method is hydrothermal synthesis. This process was used to create the first commercial products in the 1960s. These stones are grown in an alkaline halide medium. The growth happens through a diffusion-reaction process assisted by convection. Some companies even grow a thin layer of emerald over colorless beryl seeds.
