Elijah Muhammad was a leader for the Nation of Islam. He led this group from 1933 until 1975. He was born in Georgia in 1897. As a young man, he worked in many hard jobs. He moved to the North to find better work. In Detroit, he met a man named Wallace Fard Muhammad. Fard taught about black pride and independence. After Fard disappeared in 1934, Elijah Muhammad took control. He changed the group's name to the Nation of Islam.

He taught that black people were the original humans. He wanted black people to have their own nation. He also helped people find jobs and homes. His group grew to have tens of thousands of members. They owned many things like grocery stores and farms. He even wrote books about how to eat. He said some foods were healthy and others were not. He wanted his followers to be strong and proud. He died in 1975 in Chicago. His son, Wallace Muhammad, became the new leader.
