Electric flux

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Electric flux is a way to measure electricity. It tells us how much of an electric field passes through a surface.

An electric field is a force around a charge. This field can push on other charges in space. Scientists use electric flux to understand these invisible forces. It helps us see how much energy moves through an area. This idea is very important in the study of electromagnetism.

Think of the field as many tiny lines. We call these Gauss lines. These lines show the strength and direction of the field.

If the lines are very close together, the field is strong. This is called electric flux density. To find the total flux, we count the lines passing through a surface. The size of the surface matters a lot. The angle of the surface also changes the result.

One of the most famous rules is Gauss's law. This law is part of Maxwell's equations.

It describes what happens with a closed surface. A closed surface is a shape that holds things inside. Gauss's law says the flux depends on the charge inside. The total charge inside determines the amount of flux. Charges outside the surface do not change this total flux.

Scientists use specific numbers to measure this. The SI unit for electric flux is the volt-meter. You can also write this as newton-meter squared per coulomb.

The math uses a special number called the electric constant. This is also called the permittivity of free space. It is written as epsilon naught. This constant helps link the charge to the flux. Using these numbers makes the math very precise.

This concept helps us understand the world around us. It connects to how we study electric and magnetic fields.

You might know about how magnets work. This is a similar way of looking at forces. It works best when shapes have symmetry. Spherical and cylindrical shapes are great for this. These shapes make the hard math much easier to do.
