Edward Wadie Said was a prominent Palestinian and American academic.

He served as a professor of literature at Columbia University. Said was a central figure in the founding of post-colonial studies. This field examines how history and culture influence power. He was also a literary critic and a political activist. His work changed how researchers approach Middle Eastern studies and literary theory. He believed intellectuals must judge and criticize to protect individual agency.

Said's early life was defined by movement and cultural shifts. He was born in Jerusalem in 1935. At that time, Jerusalem was part of the British Mandate for Palestine. His parents were Palestinian Christians. His father, Wadie Said, had served in the United States Army during World War I. This service allowed the family to hold United States citizenship. Following the 1948 Palestine war, the family relocated to Egypt.

They eventually moved to the United States, which shaped Said's worldview.

His education was marked by academic excellence and social challenges. He attended Victoria College in Egypt before moving to the United States. At Northfield Mount Hermon School, he experienced social alienation. However, he remained a top student in his class of 160. He graduated from Princeton University in 1957. Later, he earned a doctorate in English literature from Harvard University in 1964. Said became fluent in three languages: English, French, and Arabic.

One of Said's most significant contributions was his study of Orientalism.

In his 1978 book, *Orientalism*, he critiqued Western perceptions of the East. He argued that Western culture held a persistent prejudice against Arabo-Islamic peoples. This prejudice often relied on false or romanticized images of Asia and the Middle East. Said claimed these representations helped justify colonial and imperial ambitions. He also criticized Arab elites who accepted these false Western images.

Said explored how culture and empire are deeply linked. He studied the concept of the cultural archive. This archive includes narratives, histories, and travel tales. He argued that these stories often support imperial conquest. His work showed how disciplines like anthropology and English literature relate to empire.

He even analyzed the works of authors like Joseph Conrad to show these connections. This approach transformed how scholars view the relationship between literature and politics.

Throughout his career, Said held many prestigious positions. He joined the faculty at Columbia University in 1963. He taught there until 2003. He was also a visiting professor at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and Johns Hopkins.

Said lectured at more than 200 universities across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. He served as president of the Modern Language Association. His influence reached far beyond the classroom through his many books and public lectures.

Said was also deeply involved in political advocacy. He was a member of the Palestinian National Council. He supported a two-state solution that included the Palestinian right of return. In 1993, he resigned from the council because he criticized the Oslo Accords. Later, in 1999, he argued that a single Israeli-Palestinian state might be the only way to achieve sustainable peace. He advocated for a Palestinian state to ensure equality in the territories occupied by Israel.
