Edward Lear was a very busy man.

Edward Lear was a man of many talents.

Lear was a very skilled artist who studied nature. He was an ornithological draughtsman, which means he drew birds. He was one of the first major artists to draw birds from life. Instead of drawing from old skins, he watched real birds.
His life began in London in 1812. He was part of a very large family. He was the second to last of 21 children. His father was a stockbroker named Jeremiah Lear. When Edward was only four, his family had less money. He lived with his older sister, Ann, who cared for him.
Lear spent much of his life exploring the world.

Music and friendship were also important to him. He played the piano, flute, and even the accordion. He wrote songs like "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat." He spent his later years in San Remo, Italy. He lived in a home he called Villa Tennyson.
Edward Lear was a versatile English polymath of the 19th century.

As an artist, Lear followed a precise scientific method. He was a professional ornithological draughtsman, meaning he specialized in drawing birds. Unlike many artists of his time, he drew birds from life. He observed living specimens rather than drawing from preserved skins.
Lear's artistic output can be categorized into three distinct areas. First, he produced highly detailed scientific illustrations of animals. Second, he created colored wash drawings during his global travels. He later converted these sketches into oil paintings or watercolors in his studio.
Lear's early life was marked by both large family numbers and financial instability. He was born in London in 1812 to Ann Clark Skerrett and Jeremiah Lear. He was the penultimate of 21 children. Following economic upheaval after the Napoleonic Wars, his family's finances became limited. At age four, Lear and his eldest sister, Ann, moved to live separately from their parents. Ann acted as a maternal figure for him until her death. Lear also managed chronic health issues, including epilepsy and asthma. He described his periods of severe depression as "the Morbids."
His travels provided the foundation for much of his later work. Between 1842 and 1847, he explored the Italian peninsula extensively. He traveled through regions like Lazio, Rome, Abruzzo, and Sicily.
Beyond visual arts, Lear was a dedicated composer and musician. He played several instruments, including the piano, flute, and accordion. He composed twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry. Notably, these were the only musical settings that Tennyson personally approved of.
In his later years, Lear settled in San Remo, Italy. He lived in a villa he named "Villa Tennyson." He spent much of his time with his cat, Foss, and his Albanian chef, Giorgis. Lear died in 1888 from heart disease.
