He spent his whole life working to change his country. He served as a minister, a senator, and the leader of his party. Most importantly, he was the 28th president of Chile from 1964 to 1970. His work helped many people find better lives. Even his son, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, later became president from 1994 to 2000. Frei's life shows how one person can lead many changes.

Frei's journey began with a strong education. He was born in Santiago on January 16, 1911. His family moved to a place called Lontué when he was young. His father worked as an accountant at a winery. Eduardo went to school in Lontué and then a boarding school in Santiago. Later, he studied law at the Universidad Católica School of Law. He graduated as a lawyer in 1933. He married María Ruiz-Tagle, and they had seven children together.

His political career grew steadily over many years. He first joined the Conservative Party as a young man. In 1938, he helped start a new group called the Falange Nacional. By 1949, he was an elected senator for Atacama and Coquimbo. He also traveled to New York to work for the United Nations. In 1957, his group became the Christian Democratic Party. Frei became the leader of this new party. He ran for president several times before finally winning in 1964.

As president, Frei started many big projects to help Chile. He used a slogan called "Revolution in Liberty" to explain his ideas. One big goal was to help people with housing and education. His government built around 260,000 houses for families. He also built about 3,000 new schools across the country. Because of this, more children could go to school than ever before. Primary school coverage reached 90% for most children by 1970.

Frei also worked to make life fairer in the countryside. He started agrarian reform to help people who worked on farms. This meant the government changed how large estates were run. He also made sure farm workers earned more money. To help people stay healthy, he built 20 clinics and 16 hospitals. These new health centers helped many babies survive. He even helped create groups for mothers and neighbors to work together. These changes gave many people new hope for the future.
