Murphy's performance style often involves playing multiple distinct characters within a single production. This technique serves as a personal tribute to his idol, the actor Peter Sellers. By using different voices and mannerisms, he can inhabit several roles at once. He demonstrated this skill in films like Coming to America, Vampire in Brooklyn, and The Nutty Professor. He also applied this versatility to voice acting for animated characters. He provided the voice for Mushu in Disney's Mulan in 1998. He is also well known as Donkey in the Shrek franchise, which began in 2001.

His journey into professional comedy began with stand-up performances in the late 1970s. At age fifteen, he was inspired to become a comedian after listening to Richard Pryor. He marked the official start of his career on July 9, 1976. On that date, he performed an impersonation of singer Al Green at a talent show. This led to various club appearances and eventually a role on Saturday Night Live. He was a regular cast member on the show from 1980 to 1984. During this time, he helped revitalize the program with characters like Mr. Robinson and a cynical Gumby.

Murphy's rise to movie stardom occurred rapidly during the 1980s. He made his big-screen debut in the 1982 film 48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte. This was followed by the successful film Trading Places in 1983. His first solo leading role was in the action comedy Beverly Hills Cop in 1984. This film became the highest-grossing comedy of all time at that period. It also became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever released. By the end of the decade, Murphy had become Hollywood's biggest box-office star. He also directed and starred in the film Harlem Nights in 1989.

His early life in New York City included periods of significant personal challenge. Born on April 3, 1961, in Brooklyn, he was raised in the Bushwick neighborhood. His father, Charles Edward Murphy, was a transit police officer and an amateur comedian. Tragically, his father was murdered in 1969. When his mother became ill, Murphy and his brother lived in foster care for one year. Murphy has stated that his time in foster care influenced his sense of humor. He was eventually raised in Roosevelt, New York, by his mother and stepfather.

Despite his immense success, Murphy experienced a period of commercial decline. This occurred from roughly 1989 through the late 1990s. Critical praise for his films decreased during this time. His film Beverly Hills Cop III in 1994 was particularly poorly received by critics. However, he eventually achieved a major career resurgence in recent years. This comeback was driven by leading roles in films like Dolemite Is My Name in 2019. He also starred in Coming 2 America in 2021 and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F in 2024.
