Ecological succession

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Nature is always moving and changing. This way of change is called ecological succession. It describes how different types of living things change in a community over time.

There are two main ways this happens. Primary succession starts in a brand new habitat with no living things at all. Secondary succession happens after a disturbance like a fire or a natural disaster. These events destroy a community that was already there.

Both types follow patterns, but they can also change in many different ways.

Succession works through several clear steps. First, a bare area appears, which scientists call nudation. Next, seeds or small life forms arrive through migration. Then, these new plants settle and begin to grow, a step called ecesis. As the plants become well established, they begin to compete for light, space, and nutrients.

Eventually, the plants change the habitat itself. This is called reaction, where things like soil buildup help one group of plants replace another. Finally, the area reaches stabilization when a stable climax community forms.

People have studied these changes for a long time. Henry Chandler Cowles first documented succession in the Indiana Dunes during the late 19th century.

Later, in 1916, Frederic Clements published a descriptive theory about it. He believed that one type of climate would lead to one specific end point. In 1935, another scientist named Tansley suggested that local things like soil and water matter too. By 1953, Whittaker proposed that the whole environment determines the balance of the community.

Today, we know that ecosystems are much more complex and cyclical than we once thought.

There are different kinds of climax communities. A climatic climax is controlled mostly by the regional weather. An edaphic climax is shaped by local things like soil moisture or slope.

Some areas have a catastrophic climax, which is a community that is vulnerable to events like wildfires. For example, chaparral in California is a type of catastrophic climax. There is also something called a disclimax. This is a stable community that is kept in place by humans or their animals. One example is when animals overgraze a field and turn it into a desert of bushes.

You can think of succession like a relay race. Each group of plants passes the baton to the next group. As plants grow, they create shade and add organic matter to the soil. This changes the environment for the next group of arrivals.

This creates a feedback loop where plants and the land affect each other. Sometimes seeds cannot reach a new spot, which is called dispersal limitation. Other times, the seeds arrive but cannot survive the local conditions. This is called environmental filtering. These small details help shape the amazing world we see around us.
