As it moves into La Rioja and Navarre, the landscape changes. The river begins to form a wider valley among limestone rocks. This limestone is part of a large bedrock formed from an ancient seabed. In these areas, karst geological processes have shaped the terrain. Karst refers to landscapes formed by the dissolving of soluble carbonate rocks. As the river continues through Aragon, the valley expands. The water volume increases as larger tributaries discharge into the main channel. This increase is especially noticeable during the spring thawing season when mountain snow melts.

The Ebro basin experiences a complex Mediterranean and continental climate. Because the valley is isolated from sea air by surrounding mountains, it faces extreme seasonal contrasts. Summers are often semiarid and very hot. Temperatures can exceed 40°C and occasionally rise above 45°C. In contrast, winters can be very cold, with temperatures often dropping below 0°C. The valley receives annual rainfall between 400 and 600 mm, with peaks in the fall and spring. In some dry areas, plants depend on moisture from condensation fog to survive. The soil in the plains is often thin and organically poor. This subsoil consists of calcareous, pebbly, and stony layers that drain water quickly.

Diverse ecosystems thrive within these various climate zones. The river supports Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrublands. In the hinterlands, you can find extensive sclerophyll shrublands known as maquis or garrigues. These areas are dominated by species like *Quercus coccifera* and *Quercus ilex*. As the climate becomes more continental and dry, the vegetation changes again. It shifts from slow-growing dwarf junipers to unvegetated desert steppes, such as the Calanda desert. The river also creates specialized habitats in endorheic lagoons. These are inland bodies of water that do not flow to the sea. In these salty zones, halophiles, or salt-loving organisms, are very common.

Human history is deeply connected to the Ebro's path. In antiquity, the river served as a major dividing line. It separated Roman expansion in the north from Carthaginian expansion in the south. The river's name is ancient; the Greeks called it *Ibēr* and the Romans called it *Hibēr*. This name even gave the Iberian Peninsula its title. In 1202, the Real Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Rueda was established on its banks. This monastery was technologically advanced for its time. It used a large waterwheel to produce power and created a hydrological central heating system. More recently, the river was the site of the Battle of the Ebro in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War.

Modern management of the river has significantly changed its natural flow. Three massive dams—Mequinenza, Riba-roja, and Flix—have been built to regulate the water.

While these help with water use, they have caused the mean annual flow to decrease by about 29 percent during the 20th century. This reduction affects the sediment load, which has dropped by more than 99 percent. This lack of sediment is a major concern for the Ebro Delta. Without new soil being washed downriver, the coastline faces increased erosion. Additionally, lower water levels allow a "salt wedge" to move further up the river. This occurs when saltwater from the sea pushes into the freshwater estuary.

The Ebro Delta is one of the largest wetlands in the western Mediterranean. It covers approximately 330 km² in the Terres de l'Ebre region. The delta is built entirely from sediments washed down by the river over time.

Today, the area is used for intensive agriculture, including rice, citrus, and vegetables. It is also a vital ecological site, providing habitat for over 300 species of birds. To protect these natural resources, Spain designated the area as the Ebro Delta Natural Park in 1983. A network of canals and irrigation ditches helps maintain both the economy and the ecology of this unique landscape.
