In 1202, the Real Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Rueda was established on its banks. This monastery was technologically advanced for its time. It used a large waterwheel to produce power and created a hydrological central heating system. More recently, the river was the site of the Battle of the Ebro in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War.
Modern management of the river has significantly changed its natural flow. Three massive dams—Mequinenza, Riba-roja, and Flix—have been built to regulate the water.
