One part was East Berlin. It was the capital of East Germany from 1949 to 1990.

In 1961, the government built the Berlin Wall. This wall kept East Berlin and West Berlin apart.

Many people wanted to leave the East. They moved to the West to find better lives. Because of this, the government made the wall to stop them. Crossing the wall was very dangerous.

Life in East Berlin changed over time. In the 1970s, workers earned more pay. They also worked fewer hours. The city had many different areas called boroughs.

On October 3, 1990, the two sides became one again. This was the day Germany was reunified. East and West Berlin joined to become one city. The government spent much money to fix the city. They wanted to make the two sides equal again.
